Role Summary

McGregor is seeking a contract design engineer for a 3 to 6 month project to design two steel frame sections for the business.

This role is focused on taking frame concepts through design development into production-ready output. The engineer will be responsible for developing practical, manufacturable frame designs using SolidWorks, working closely with the manufacturing team to ensure the final designs are suitable for fabrication, assembly, and future product use.

This is a hands-on technical role suited to someone with strong experience in fabricated steel, frame design, and design for manufacture. The successful candidate must be able to work quickly, communicate clearly, and deliver complete design packs within the project timescale.

Key ResponsibilitiesFrame Design

  • Design and develop two steel frame sections for McGregor structures
  • Translate design requirements into practical engineered solutions
  • Refine concepts into robust, repeatable, manufacturable designs
  • Ensure designs are suitable for fabrication, assembly, and use in the field

CAD & Technical Development

  • Produce 3D models and detailed design work in SolidWorks
  • Create production-ready drawings and technical information
  • Develop BOMs, part details, and manufacturing handover information
  • Ensure designs are clear, accurate, and ready for use by production

Design for Manufacture

  • Work closely with manufacturing to ensure designs are efficient and practical to produce
  • Consider material use, fabrication methods, assembly, and repeatability
  • Reduce unnecessary complexity and support efficient production
  • Help bridge the gap between design and manufacturing

Collaboration

  • Work with management and internal teams to understand product and project requirements
  • Review designs with manufacturing and operations where needed
  • Respond to technical feedback and refine designs accordingly
  • Communicate progress clearly throughout the project

Project Delivery

  • Deliver the agreed outputs within the 3 to 6 month contract period
  • Work to a structured timeline and agreed milestones
  • Ensure final outputs are complete, organised, and suitable for future use by the business

Deliverables

  • Two completed frame section designs
  • SolidWorks models
  • Production-ready drawings
  • BOMs / part lists
  • Manufacturing handover pack
  • Final design revisions following internal review

RequirementsExperience & Skills

  • Strong experience in design engineering
  • Strong SolidWorks capability
  • Experience designing fabricated steel or structural frame components
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes and design for manufacture
  • Able to produce accurate production drawings and technical documentation
  • Experience working with workshop or factory teams
  • Able to work independently and deliver to deadlines

Personal Attributes

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good communicator
  • Organised and dependable
  • Hands-on and commercially aware
  • Comfortable working at pace in a small business environment

  • Close collaboration with a manufacturing-led business
  • A short-term role with meaningful impact on future product capability
