Full job description

Our client is a leading Tier 1 main contractor with a strong reputation for delivering major infrastructure and civil engineering projects across the UK. Working across a broad range of sectors, they provide innovative engineering solutions on complex projects for both public and private sector clients.

Due to continued growth and a healthy pipeline of secured work, they are looking to appoint an experienced Senior Estimator to strengthen their Pre-Construction team.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an established business where you will play a key role in securing future projects, influencing project strategy from an early stage, and working collaboratively with operational, commercial and design teams.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Estimating or Estimating Manager, you will be responsible for leading the preparation of competitive and commercially robust tenders for a variety of civil engineering and infrastructure schemes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Producing detailed cost estimates for major civil engineering and infrastructure projects.
  • Leading the estimating process from initial enquiry through to final tender submission.
  • Reviewing drawings, specifications and contract documentation to identify project requirements.
  • Developing first-principles estimates where required and benchmarking against historical cost data.
  • Obtaining and evaluating quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Working closely with operational, commercial, planning and design teams to develop competitive bid strategies.
  • Identifying opportunities for value engineering, innovation and programme efficiencies.
  • Assessing project risks and opportunities and incorporating these into tender submissions.
  • Supporting bid presentations, client meetings and pre-construction activities where required.
  • Maintaining accurate estimating records and contributing to continuous improvement within the estimating function.
  • Assisting with the successful handover of secured projects to delivery teams.

About You

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Previous estimating experience within a Tier 1 contractor or established civil engineering contractor.
  • A background delivering infrastructure or civil engineering projects.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to interpret technical documentation and pricing information.
  • Knowledge of standard forms of construction contract.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tender submissions simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with industry estimating software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • A relevant qualification in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related discipline is desirable.
