Full job description

At Thomas Owen Care we are seeking for a full-time head Housekeeper for one of our care homes in Dewsbury (Thomas Owen House). We are a family-run company based in Leeds and Dewsbury, and are looking to expand more in the near future. We specialise in nursing care for those with complex mental health issues and care for people who are suffering from a range of disorders like schizophrenia or depression.

This is a crucial role to manage to help maintain safe, clean and comfortable environments. The right applicant will be compassionate and organised, with an understanding of the effects a calming environment can have on our residents' well-being. You will oversee the housekeeping and laundry departments, ensure strict compliance with health and safety regulations, and foster a team culture rooted in empathy and respect.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Supervise and train the housekeeping and laundry staff. Conduct regular performance reviews and provide ongoing mentorship.
  • Environmental Standards: Oversee deep cleaning of resident rooms, communal areas, clinical spaces, and administrative offices to ensure the highest standards of hygiene.
  • Infection Control: Implement and maintain rigorous infection control procedures in line with healthcare regulatory standards (e.g., COSHH)- liaising with the IPC nurse lead
  • Inventory & Budgeting: Manage supplies of cleaning chemicals, PPE, and linen. Order stock within the allocated budget and maintain accurate inventory records. Manage audits
  • Resident Interaction: Ensure the housekeeping team interacts with residents living with schizophrenia in a patient, non-confrontational, and supportive manner, respecting their personal space and routines.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the nursing and clinical teams to coordinate room cleaning schedules that minimise distress or disruption to the residents.Infection control - liaising with the IPC nurse lead

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of supervisory experience in housekeeping, ideally within a healthcare, residential care, or hospital setting.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of infection control, health and safety regulations, and safe chemical handling.
  • Soft Skills: High level of emotional intelligence, patience, and excellent communication skills. A non-judgmental approach to mental health conditions is essential. Conflict resolution skills.
  • Basic skill in excel - managing rota and annual leave
  • Communication skills - liaising with maintenance, domestic, admin, and nurses.
