Job Title: Clinical Psychologist Preceptorship
Location: Remote-Working
Salary: Equivalent to NHS Band 7, rising to Band 8a equivalent on successful completion of preceptorship training programme (typically within 6-9 months)
Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a newly or recently qualified Clinical Psychologist to join our specialist autism assessment service. You will join on a structured preceptorship pathway, gaining advanced competencies in autism assessment through a supportive, competency-based training programme. You will work as part of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team to deliver high-quality, neurodiversity-affirming assessments for children, young people, and adults. Your work will be supported through regular supervision, co-working, reflective practice and training sessions before graduating into independent assessment work.
This role is ideal for either qualified Clinical Psychologists early in their careers who wish to specialise in autism assessment or for more experienced clinicians hoping to build on their existing understanding and expertise. You must have or be working towards your Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
Key Responsibilities; Training and Development
- Participate fully in the structured preceptorship training programme (approx. 3-6 months), including the curriculum of training sessions, regular reflective practice sessions, observing experienced clinicians and completing the CPD reading list
- Attend formal training in the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised) standardised assessment tool
Maintain a portfolio of competency development and reflective practice
- Progress toward independent diagnostic practice and transition to Band 8a equivalent level
Clinical Responsibilities (once graduated)
- Conduct developmental and diagnostic assessments under close supervision before progressing to fully independent assessment work
- Gather and synthesise information from a range of sources including families, schools, and health professionals
- Develop diagnostic formulations using a trauma-informed, evidence-based approach
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and contribute to diagnostic decision-making
- Communicate complex clinical findings in a clear, compassionate, and accessible manner to individuals, families and professionals
- Prepare high-quality, readable and neuroaffirmative reports with individualised recommendations
- Uphold the values of neurodiversity-affirming and culturally responsive care
Professional Responsibilities
- Work within HCPC standards, NICE Guidelines, the BPS Code of Ethics and Conduct and current best practice in neurodevelopmental assessment
- Maintain professional registration, CPD portfolio, and engagement with relevant legislation and research
- Keep up to date with research and advances in autism assessment, contributing to CPD and evidence-based practice
- Safeguard the welfare of vulnerable clients and uphold consent and confidentiality procedures
- Engage in reflective practice and contribute to service evaluation and improvement
- Ensure assessments are culturally sensitive and inclusive, avoiding assumptions based on gender, ethnicity, or neurotypical norms
- Maintain clear, secure and timely documentation in accordance with data protection laws
- Use non-stigmatising language and promote a neurodiversity-affirming approach in reports and feedback
- Work effectively with colleagues from education, psychiatry, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and social care
- Use supervision to support emotional resilience and reflective capacity, particularly given the complexity of some cases
What We Offer
- A structured and supportive preceptorship training programme, with lived experience and evidence-based teaching within a neuroaffirmative and trauma-informed model.
- Dedicated clinical supervision, mentorship and reflective practice space alongside co- working opportunities with experienced clinicians
- Opportunities for service development, quality improvement, and specialisation
- Clear progression pathway to Band 8a equivalent and beyond
- A neurodiversity-affirming, inclusive working culture
