The Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptional Senior Cosmetic Formulation Consultant to work directly with the Founder and our manufacturing, testing, regulatory and IP partners.

This is a senior consultancy role for an experienced, creative and hands-on cosmetic scientist capable of helping NEX develop a new generation of high-performance skincare built around skin longevity, barrier health, hydration, pigmentation, resilience and healthy ageing.

The consultant will help shape both individual formulations and the long-term scientific and innovation platform of NEX Skincare.

We are particularly interested in innovation around encapsulation, precision delivery, peptides, ceramides, phyto-exosomes, retinoids, antioxidants, pigmentation science, barrier repair, advanced hydration systems, microbiome-supportive skincare and high-performance botanical actives.

The Consultant We Are Looking For

You should ideally have:

10+ years’ hands-on cosmetic formulation experience
MSc in Cosmetic Science, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Science, Formulation Science or equivalent
A strong track record developing premium, clinical or dermocosmetic skincare
Experience formulating products for internationally recognised skincare brands
Proven experience taking products from concept through laboratory development, testing, scale-up and commercial manufacture
Strong knowledge of advanced delivery and encapsulation technologies
Experience formulating across different skin tones, including melanin-rich skin
Strong understanding of UK and EU cosmetic regulation
Experience with stability, compatibility, microbiological and challenge testing
Working knowledge of CPSR and PIF requirements
Strong ingredient and raw-material knowledge
Experience working with contract manufacturers and laboratories
SPF development experience would be highly desirable

Working with ingredient suppliers and manufacturers
Supporting clinical and claims-testing strategies
Identifying potentially protectable formulation innovations
Helping develop future intellectual property

Inclusive Skin Science

Inclusive formulation is fundamental to NEX.

Our existing clinical work spans Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI, and the brand is deliberately designed around performance across different skin tones rather than treating inclusivity as an afterthought.

Experience with pigmentation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melanin-rich skin and formulation considerations across different phototypes would therefore be particularly valuable.

Responsibilities

The consultant will:

Review existing NEX formulations and technologies
Develop new product concepts and formulations
Create formulation briefs and technical specifications
Research emerging ingredients and technologies
Produce and optimise laboratory prototypes
Lead formulation troubleshooting
Coordinate stability and compatibility testing
Support safety and regulatory documentation
Work directly with contract manufacturers
Support pilot and commercial scale-up
Develop manufacturing methods and specifications
Support efficacy, clinical and claims-testing programmes
Work with our patent and IP advisers where appropriate
Help establish a long-term NEX formulation and innovation roadmap

Evidence of Experience

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide five examples of skincare products they have personally formulated or materially developed, including:

Brand or client, where permitted
Product type
Their personal contribution
Key innovation or formulation challenge
Testing undertaken
Manufacturing scale achieved
Whether the product reached commercial launch

Consultancy Structure

This is initially a consultancy appointment, with the potential to develop into a significant long-term permanent relationship as NEX expands its skincare portfolio.

We are open to both highly experienced independent cosmetic scientists and senior consultants operating through established formulation practices.
