Full job description

Are you experienced in the recovery of debts and have you worked in a customer facing environment? You could be the person we are looking for to join our recovery team.

The ideal candidate should be confident in dealing with members of the public, whether that be face to face, via the telephone or by written communication. You should also be confident in the use of computers and have an ability to work with figures.

You will be responsible for the billing and / or collection of a variety of debts due to the Local Authorities in our shared service. These debts include Council Tax, Non-Domestic Rates, Overpayment of Housing Benefit, Bid Levies, Sundry Debts and Former Tenant Arrears.

A knowledge of Local Taxation and Benefits legislation, policies and procedures is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided.

Partnership working with the District Councils of Lincoln, North Kesteven and West Lindsey. The job is based within City of Lincoln Council offices at City Hall, but there will be flexibility once trained to work from home for a number of days per week.

There are two posts available; one permanent and another fixed term for 12 months.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work under the general direction of the Senior Recovery and NNDR / BIDS Officer and Recovery & NNDR / BIDS Team Leader to administer the registration, billing, collection and recovery of Business Rates and BIDS, and the recovery of Council Tax, Benefit Overpayments, Sundry Debtors and Former Tenants Arrears, and any other debts that may fall within the remit of this role in an accurate, effective and efficient manner.
  • Provide advice and support to customers and promote a ‘one stop’ approach to service delivery.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the duties and responsibilities of other sections within the partner authorities and other external stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Ability to work to deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and written.
  • Knowledge of recovery / negotiating techniques.
  • Previous experience working in a customer facing environment.
  • GCSE English and Maths grade A – C or equivalent qualification or experience.
