About Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre

Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre has been a cornerstone of support for the LGBTQ+ community in Leicester since 1976. Originally established as one of the UK’s first gay helplines, the Centre has spent 50 years advocating for the rights, wellbeing, and visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals. Our mission is to continue championing equality and inclusion across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, creating safe and supportive spaces for all LGBTQ+ individuals.

Role Summary

We are looking for a qualified and experienced Domestic Abuse Counsellor to join our specialist support service.

The postholder will provide confidential, LGBTQ+ affirming 1-2-1 counselling to people aged 14 and over who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse. You will manage a small caseload of up to six clients, working within the hours available and in accordance with your professional competencies and the needs of the service.

You will work closely with our Outreach Manager and wider counselling and support team to ensure that clients receive appropriate, coordinated and person-centred support.

The role will include managing referrals, completing assessments, maintaining appropriate case records and working collaboratively around safeguarding and risk. You will be expected to maintain regular clinical supervision and undertake ongoing professional development in line with relevant professional standards.

The role is currently 8 hours per week, normally delivered over one day. We are also open to discussing flexibility across two days where this better supports the needs of the successful candidate and the service.

Our Commitment to Inclusion

Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre is committed to creating an inclusive organisation that reflects and understands the communities we support.

We particularly welcome applications from LGBTQ+ people, people from Global Majority backgrounds, trans and gender-diverse people, disabled people and people with lived experience relevant to our work.

We recognise that professional expertise and lived experience can both bring valuable perspectives to this role. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a genuine commitment to LGBTQ+ equality and inclusive practice.

Key Responsibilities

Counselling and Client Support

  • Provide safe, confidential and LGBTQ+ affirming 1-2-1 counselling to clients aged 14 and over who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse.
  • Maintain a caseload of up to six clients, working with the Head of Counselling to manage appointments and therapeutic work effectively within the hours available.
  • Work within professional boundaries and your level of competence, using appropriate therapeutic approaches for clients affected by domestic abuse and trauma.
  • Support clients to explore their experiences, develop coping strategies and identify appropriate sources of ongoing support.
  • Work in a way that recognises the impact of domestic abuse, including coercive and controlling behaviour, isolation, trauma and barriers to accessing support.
  • Work collaboratively with the Outreach Manager and wider Centre team where appropriate, ensuring that support is coordinated and client-led.

Referrals, Assessment and Case Management

  • Complete appropriate initial assessments, including consideration of presenting needs, risk and safeguarding.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential and timely client records in accordance with Centre policies, professional requirements and data protection legislation.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to changes in risk, safeguarding concerns or support needs, escalating concerns in line with Centre procedures.
  • Contribute to the accurate recording and monitoring of service activity, including KPI tracking, outcomes and other data required for internal monitoring and funder reporting.
  • Ensure client and service data is recorded accurately and within agreed timescales, while maintaining confidentiality and data protection requirements.

Safeguarding and Professional Practice

  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding procedures and relevant legislation, particularly in relation to children and young people and adults at risk.
  • Follow the Centre's safeguarding, confidentiality, information sharing, domestic abuse and risk management procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and contribute to a safe and respectful service environment.
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision in accordance with BACP guidance and the Centre's supervision requirements.
  • Maintain professional registration or membership with an appropriate professional body.
  • Undertake regular continuing professional development (CPD) and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant therapeutic practice.

LGBTQ+ Inclusive Practice

  • Provide counselling that is explicitly LGBTQ+ affirming, inclusive and responsive to the experiences of LGBTQ+ clients.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the specific issues and barriers that LGBTQ+ people may experience in relation to domestic abuse, including identity-based abuse, isolation, outing, minority stress and barriers to accessing mainstream services.
  • Contribute to an inclusive environment in which clients feel respected, believed and able to discuss their experiences without judgement.
  • Continue to develop knowledge of LGBTQ+ issues and the intersection between identity, relationships, domestic abuse and mental wellbeing.
