Full job description
Company Overview
Uist Asco, located about five miles from Lochmaddy on the Island of North Uist, is a seaweed processor that has been drying seaweeds since 2014. This region of Scotland has a long and proud history of harvesting seaweed and creating jobs and economic growth from this renewable marine resource.
Summary
Uist Asco is hiring a Mechanical Harvester Operator to work in Uist, Scotland.
The Mechanical Harvester Crew (MHC) is responsible for operating in a fleet of vessels designed for seaweed harvesting. The MHC ensures a safe, efficient and sustainable harvest of seaweed. Varying skill levels from novice to experienced skipper will be considered.
In this role you will:
- Act as skipper/crew in the harvesting fleet, operating around the shores of Uist
- Complete regular inspections and basic maintenance of the fleet to prevent mechanical breakdowns and downtime.
- Ensure adequate spare parts are available to ensure maximum harvest time and reduce downtime due to break downs.
- Follow all guidelines for the mechanical harvester as instructed and required
- Work with the Resource Manager to establish and maintain logistics planning to assure timely take out and best practices with respect to resource handling.
- Ensure all harvesting activities are carried out in accordance with company procedures, policies and manage the natural resource to maintain sustainability. Ensure that all operational requirements are in place to produce the required budget volumes of raw material.
- Support the company’s vision and policies regarding Health & Safety, Corporate Culture, Environmental Management and the Progressive Excellence Program by displaying the appropriate behaviors and leadership towards meeting the company’s objectives in these areas.
Requirements:
The successful candidate may have the following:
- Experience working on commercial boats, preferably small workboats and fishing vessels
- Experience operating machinery
- Experience operating crane considered an asset
- Valid driver’s license
- Certification for commercial work/fishing boats
Working Conditions
The MHC will spend a significant amount of their time on the coastal shores and on the water. The work includes manual handling of equipment such as nets, ropes and chains. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to ensure safety on land and on the water. In addition, much of the harvesting work is dependent on tides and tide schedules, thus flexibility and rigor are required in a daily work schedule. This is a full-time job, working shifts (e.g. 2 weeks on/2weeks off). This is not a regular day to day office job.
If this job sounds like it was made for you, we’d like to meet you. To further explore this opportunity, just submit your application to csmith@acadian.ca.
We thank all applicants for their interest, however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted. No phone calls please.
