Full job description
We are looking for a reliable and enthusiastic Groundsperson to support the Grounds Team in the preparation, maintenance, and presentation of the school’s external sports surfaces, including natural turf pitches and all-weather playing surfaces. This role ensures that sports facilities are maintained to a high standard to support the school’s sporting programme, fixtures, and events throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities
Sports Surface Preparation & Maintenance
- Assist with the preparation, marking, and maintenance of natural turf sports pitches for rugby, cricket, rounders, football, and other seasonal sports.
- Maintain and care for all-weather surfaces, such as artificial turf pitches, athletics areas, and tennis/netball courts.
- Undertake routine maintenance tasks, including mowing, aeration, scarification, fertilising, overseeding, and irrigation.
- Carry out line marking and set up sports equipment for training sessions, matches, and school events.
- Repair divots, worn areas, and carry out turf renovation work as required.
Grounds & Estate Maintenance
- Maintain general school grounds, including lawns, landscaped areas, hedges, shrubs, and trees.
- Ensure pathways, outdoor areas, playgrounds, and spectator zones are clean, safe, and presentable.
- Assist with seasonal tasks such as leaf clearance, snow and ice management, and site tidy-ups.
- Support the preparation of grounds for school events, sports days, and external fixtures.
Machinery & Equipment
- Safely operate and maintain a range of grounds maintenance machinery and tools (e.g., ride-on mowers, pedestrian mowers, tractors, line markers, and hand tools).
- Carry out routine checks, cleaning, and basic maintenance of equipment.
- Ensure all tools and machinery are stored safely and securely after use.
Health, Safety & Security
- Follow all health and safety procedures and risk assessments when carrying out tasks.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report hazards, faults, or damage to the Head Groundsman or Head of Operations.
- Work in accordance with safeguarding and school policies.
- Contribute to site-wide security vigilance as part of the Operations Team.
Team Support
- Work collaboratively as part of the Operations Team.
- Provide support during busy periods, sports fixtures, and school events.
- Occasionally work outside normal hours to support evening or weekend fixtures or events when required.
Person Specification
Essential
- Interest in sports turf management and grounds maintenance.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Practical approach with good attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Good time management and reliability.
- Basic understanding of health and safety in the workplace.
- Physical fitness suitable for the role.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Previous experience in sports turf, grounds maintenance, or landscaping.
- Relevant qualification in horticulture, sports turf, or land-based studies.
- Experience using grounds maintenance machinery.
- PA1/PA6 spraying certificates.
Personal Qualities

Working Hours
Full-time, typically 37.5 hours per week, with seasonal overtime and flexibility required to support evening or weekend sporting fixtures and school events.
