Learning Support Assistant – SEN

Location: Colchester, Essex
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am–3:30pm
Contract: Full-time, term time only
Start date: ASAP

Make a genuine difference in a young person’s education

talentED is working with specialist SEN schools across Colchester that are looking to recruit enthusiastic and dependable Learning Support Assistants.

You will support children and young people with a range of additional needs, helping them participate in lessons, develop their independence and feel safe and confident at school.

Whether you are an experienced Learning Support Assistant or looking to begin a career in education, psychology, youth work or special educational needs, we would be interested in hearing from you.

The role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will:

  • Support pupils individually and in small groups
  • Assist pupils with SEN, including autism, ADHD, SEMH and complex learning needs
  • Help pupils remain engaged, focused and involved in learning
  • Support positive behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Encourage pupils to develop their confidence, communication and independence
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs and pastoral teams
  • Help maintain a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environment

Depending on your experience and the school’s requirements, you may support pupils across different age groups, subject areas and specialist provisions.

Who we are looking for

This opportunity may suit:

  • Experienced Teaching Assistants or Learning Support Assistants
  • Graduates considering careers in teaching, psychology, therapy, youth work or SEN
  • Care or support workers looking to move into education
  • Sports coaches, mentors and youth workers
  • Individuals with personal or professional experience of supporting additional needs

Previous school-based experience is helpful but not essential. The most important qualities are patience, reliability, resilience and a genuine desire to support young people.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a calm, positive and adaptable approach
  • Be confident building relationships with children and young people
  • Communicate effectively with pupils and colleagues
  • Work well as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Be reliable, proactive and willing to learn
  • Understand the importance of safeguarding and professional boundaries
  • Have experience supporting autism, ADHD, SEMH, complex needs or behaviours that challenge—desirable but not essential
