Full job description

PLEASE READ THIS PART FIRST

Three things rule people out straight away:

  • You must be 25 or over. Our van insurance will not cover anyone under 25.
  • No accidents or insurance claims in the last 5 years, and no more than 6 points on your licence.
  • You must live in the Feltham area, and within 20 minutes of your teammate. The van collects you from home, so applications from outside the area cannot be progressed.

If any of those are a problem, please don't apply. It saves us both the time.

ABOUT THE JOB

Boxmove collects and delivers donated furniture for more than 40 UK charities. You'll work in a two-man team, out on the road all day, moving furniture between homes and charity shops.

Your day starts and finishes at your own front door. There is no depot, no commute and no travel cost. One of you picks the other up on the way.

WHAT THE WORK IS ACTUALLY LIKE

This is heavy physical work. You'll spend the day lifting and carrying sofas, beds, wardrobes and tables, often up stairs and through awkward doorways, in whatever weather the day gives you.

Days start between 6:30 and 7:30am and usually run around ten hours. Some run longer. Most Saturdays are included.

That's the honest version. The people who last here are the ones who wanted a physical job and are glad not to be sat at a desk. The people who don't last are usually the ones who underestimated the lifting or the length of the day.

DAY TO DAY YOU'LL BE:

  • Lifting, carrying and moving furniture, all day
  • Collecting and delivering to customers' homes and charity shops
  • Loading and securing the van safely
  • Using correct manual handling technique
  • Checking donations meet quality and fire label standards
  • Dealing with customers politely and professionally, often in their own homes

HOURS

  • 4 days a week, most Saturdays included
  • Typically 35 to 45 hours
  • Start 6:30 to 7:30am, finish late afternoon or early evening
  • Picked up from home

PAY AND BENEFITS

  • From £13.50 an hour. Rates vary by area, and there is a clear route to earn more.
  • Genuine progression: Driver, then Senior Driver, then Specialist Driver. Around a third of our current drivers have been promoted into one of those roles, and each step comes with a pay rise.
  • Zero travel costs, because you start at your door
  • Keep 100% of customer tips
  • 28 days annual leave including bank holidays
  • Holiday pay, pension and full employment benefits
  • Paid monthly on the 8th

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

Reliability, more than anything else.

Our vans go out in pairs. If one person doesn't turn up, their teammate can't work either, and a shop full of donations doesn't get collected. Poor attendance is the single biggest reason people don't get through probation here, ahead of anything to do with driving or lifting.

We also need you to be straight with us when something goes wrong on a job. Things do go wrong. We can sort almost anything if we hear about it the same day.

Beyond that:

  • Physically fit and genuinely comfortable with heavy lifting
  • Punctual and dependable
  • Able to work closely with one other person all day, every day
  • Decent with customers

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

  • Full UK licence held for 2 or more years
  • No more than 6 points
  • No accidents or insurance claims in the last 5 years
  • Able to pass a DBS check
  • Aged 25 or over, for insurance

TWO THINGS WORTH KNOWING BEFORE YOU APPLY

Our vans have dash cam and in-cab cameras. We use them for safety and for coaching, not for watching people, but you should know they're there.

We run a three strike policy on driving standards. It's applied fairly and consistently, and we'd rather you knew about it now than found out later.

HOW TO APPLY

Click Apply on Indeed.

If you're successful, you'll be invited to a fully paid trial shift, followed by a second paid driving assessment. You get paid for both, whatever the outcome.
