Role Purpose

The Functional Skills and Additional Learning Support Tutor will provide high-quality teaching, assessment and support to apprentices who require Functional Skills English and Mathematics and/or additional learning support.

The postholder will work closely with apprenticeship tutors, employers and the wider learner support team to ensure apprentices receive timely, individualised support that enables them to make progress, achieve their qualifications and successfully complete their apprenticeship.

The role will include initial and diagnostic assessment, delivery of Functional Skills English and mathematics, identification of additional learning needs, development of support plans, delivery of one-to-one and small-group interventions, and maintenance of clear evidence demonstrating the impact of support.

Key Responsibilities

Functional Skills Delivery

• Deliver engaging and inclusive Functional Skills English and mathematics sessions from Entry Level through to Level 2.
• Provide one-to-one, small-group and online teaching to meet individual learner needs.
• Develop learners’ confidence and ability to apply English and mathematics within their apprenticeship, workplace and everyday life.
• Prepare learners for Functional Skills examinations and support timely achievement.
• Plan learning in response to initial and diagnostic assessment results.
• Produce and maintain appropriate schemes of work, lesson plans and learning resources.
• Monitor attendance, engagement and progress, intervening promptly where learners fall behind.
• Work with apprenticeship tutors to embed English and mathematics within vocational learning.

Additional Learning Support

• Conduct initial discussions and assessments to identify potential additional learning needs.
• Support learners with needs including dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism, ADHD, anxiety, literacy and numeracy difficulties, communication needs and other barriers to learning.
• Develop, implement and regularly review individual support plans.
• Deliver appropriate one-to-one and small-group interventions.
• Recommend reasonable adjustments and support learners through the assessment and approval process.
• Liaise with tutors, employers, parents or carers where appropriate and external agencies where required.
• Ensure that support remains learner-centred, proportionate and focused on improving participation, progress and achievement.
• Maintain clear evidence of support activity and its impact on the learner.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring

• Complete accurate initial and diagnostic assessments.
• Set clear, measurable and appropriately challenging targets.
• Review learner progress regularly and update support plans accordingly.
• Maintain accurate records of teaching, assessment, support and learner contact.
• Track progress towards Functional Skills achievement and agreed ALS outcomes.
• Identify learners at risk of disengagement or non-achievement and implement appropriate interventions.
• Contribute to progress reviews and provide relevant updates to apprenticeship tutors and employers.

Quality and Compliance

• Ensure all delivery and support activity meets ESFA funding rules, awarding organisation requirements and internal quality standards.
• Maintain accurate and auditable evidence of additional learning support.
• Ensure reasonable adjustments and access arrangements are supported by appropriate evidence.
• Participate in observations of teaching, learning and assessment.
• Take part in standardisation, moderation, internal quality assurance and continuing professional development.
• Support preparation for Ofsted, ESFA, awarding organisation and other external audits or inspections.
• Contribute to quality improvement planning and the development of effective teaching and support practice.
• Follow safeguarding, Prevent, equality, diversity, inclusion, health and safety and data protection requirements

Learner and Employer Engagement

• Build positive and professional relationships with apprentices and employers.
• Communicate clearly with learners regarding expectations, progress and next steps.
• Promote attendance, motivation, resilience and independent learning.
• Provide employers and apprenticeship tutors with appropriate updates on progress and support needs.
• Ensure sensitive learner information is handled appropriately and shared only where necessary.
• Promote a positive learner experience and contribute to high levels of learner satisfaction.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

• Level 2 qualifications in English and mathematics, or equivalent.
• A recognised teaching qualification, such as Level 3 Award in Education and Training, Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, PGCE or equivalent.
• A recognised qualification or relevant training in supporting learners with additional learning needs.
• Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to Functional Skills, SEND or additional learning support.

Desirable Qualifications

• Level 3 or above qualification in English, mathematics, education, learning support or a related subject.
• Level 5 specialist qualification in teaching learners with dyslexia, literacy difficulties or other specific learning needs.
• Assessor qualification, such as CAVA, A1, D32/D33 or equivalent.
• Qualification in information, advice and guidance.
• Mental health, autism, ADHD or neurodiversity-related training.
• Designated safeguarding or safeguarding practitioner training.

Essential Experience

• Experience of delivering Functional Skills English and mathematics.
• Experience of supporting apprentices, adult learners or young people.
• Experience of conducting initial and diagnostic assessments.
• Experience of developing and reviewing individual learning or support plans.
• Experience of supporting learners with additional learning needs, disabilities or barriers to learning.
• Experience of tracking learner progress and maintaining accurate records.
• Experience of preparing learners for examinations or assessments.
• Experience of using online learning platforms and digital teaching tools.

Desirable Experience

• Experience of working within apprenticeships or further education.
• Experience of ESFA-funded provision.
• Experience of supporting learners aged 16 to 18 and adult apprentices.
• Experience of applying for reasonable adjustments or access arrangements.
• Experience of working with employers and workplace mentors.
• Experience of contributing to Ofsted or funding audits.
• Experience of supporting learners remotely and across multiple locations.
