Full job description

Managing Director

Liverpool, office-based with UK travel. Permanent, full-time. Competitive executive package

We are establishing a new Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) within an established group of UK electricity infrastructure businesses, and we are looking for the Managing Director who will build and lead it.

The opportunity

The IDNO is in its licensing and development phase. The strategy is to own and operate distribution networks at 11kV, 33kV and 132kV: adopting new networks built by independent connection providers, taking on existing privately owned infrastructure, and serving commercial and industrial customers, renewable generation and energy storage. These are long-life regulated assets, held for the long term.

You would report to the Group Managing Director, who will be closely involved while the company is established, providing strategic direction, resources and support. The expectation is that you quickly build the team, systems and governance to run the business yourself within an agreed delegated authority framework. This is a role for someone who wants to create a business, not inherit one.

What the role involves

· Taking the company from licence development to a fully operational, compliant distribution business.

· Owning the business plan, commercial performance, profit and loss, and funding requirement.

· Building an asset adoption pipeline and making investment decisions that hold up across the life of the assets.

· Recruiting and motivating a capable team, supported initially by external specialists where that is the right commercial answer.

· Establishing proportionate governance: enough control to be defensible to Ofgem, without slowing the business down.

What we are looking for

You will be a commercially capable senior leader with real accountability behind you, ideally in electricity distribution, energy infrastructure or another regulated sector: someone who has built or scaled something, led a team and carried profit and loss responsibility.

Previous experience as a Managing Director is not essential. We are equally interested in a strong senior leader ready for a first MD appointment, and will prioritise judgement and leadership capability over job titles. What matters most:

· You take responsibility for outcomes rather than passing problems upwards.

· You identify opportunity and inefficiency, and act on it with a clear view of capital, people and regulatory limits.

· You are ambitious about scale and disciplined about compliance, safety and cash.

· You communicate well, including when the message is difficult.

· You know when specialist advice is needed, and you are capable of challenging it.

What we offer

A genuine executive appointment with the backing of an established infrastructure group, a competitive executive with potential for participation within a long-term equity participation pathway (subject to separate agreement and approval), and the scope to shape a business from the start.

We will be straightforward: this is a start-up in a regulated industry, and it will take judgement, pace and resilience. The reward is building something substantial and owning the result.

£120,000-£150,000 per annum (depending on experience)

Pay: £120,000.00-£150,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Company pension
  • Enhanced maternity leave
  • Enhanced paternity leave
  • Life insurance
  • Private medical insurance
  • Transport links

Work Location: In person
