Kitchen Porter

Burgh Island Hotel & The Pilchard Inn, Devon
£26,436.80 per annum + Monthly Gratuities
Full-Time, Permanent (40 hours per week)

Step into a kitchen unlike any other. Burgh Island is home to two celebrated dining destinations: the iconic Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel and the historic Pilchard Inn. Behind every exceptional service is a team that keeps everything running flawlessly — and that starts with you.

We are looking for a reliable and hardworking Kitchen Porter to join our team. This is a vital role supporting our chefs while ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness, organisation, and food safety across our kitchens.

About the Role

As a Kitchen Porter, you will play a key part in maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient kitchen environment. From pot wash and stock handling to supporting food preparation and deep cleaning, your work ensures our kitchens operate to the highest professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain exceptional cleanliness across all kitchen areas, equipment, and utensils
  • Wash dishes, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment using dishwashers or by hand
  • Ensure all equipment is cleaned, stored safely, and ready for service
  • Support chefs with basic food preparation as required
  • Receive, check, and store deliveries in line with stock rotation (FIFO) procedures
  • Safely handle, use, and store cleaning chemicals in line with COSHH regulations
  • Manage waste disposal, including cleaning bins and maintaining refuse areas
  • Carry out scheduled and deep cleaning tasks to company standards
  • Maintain clean floors, surfaces, and kitchen cloths at all times
  • Assist with moving supplies and equipment safely around the kitchen
  • Monitor stock levels of cleaning supplies and report shortages in advance

What We’re Looking For

  • A strong work ethic and commitment to high standards
  • Good understanding of cleanliness, hygiene, and food safety practices
  • Ability to follow procedures and work safely with chemicals (COSHH training provided if needed)
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, physically active environment
  • Previous kitchen porter experience is beneficial but not essential

Working Hours & Flexibility

  • 40 hours per week on a rota basis
  • Includes evenings, weekends, and bank holidays

Accommodation

  • Live-in accommodation may be available in our subsidised staff housing (subject to availability at the time of offer)

Important to Know

  • Due to our remote island location, live-out applicants must have a car and valid driving licence
  • You must have the right to work in the UK – we are not able to offer visa sponsorship
