We Are BAU Group
St Albans, Hertfordshire
£33,000–£37,000 per year, depending on experience
Full-time | Permanent | Hybrid working available
Join a Growing M&E Contractor
We Are BAU Group is an established and growing Mechanical & Electrical contractor delivering projects across London and the South East.
Due to continued growth, we are looking for an experienced and proactive Document Controller to join our team and support multiple live projects.
This is a key role within the business, working closely with our Project Managers, Design Team, clients, consultants and subcontractors to ensure project information is accurate, controlled, distributed correctly and followed through.
We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their role, uses their own initiative and keeps the wider project team informed. This is not a position where you will simply wait to be given tasks.
Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years' relevant Document Controller experience within the construction, engineering or M&E industry.
The Role
As our Document Controller, you will be responsible for managing project documentation from receipt through to project completion across several live projects.
A key part of this role is being proactive. When drawings, technical information, approvals, comments, correspondence or other project documents are received, you will be expected to identify whether action is required, notify the appropriate member of the project team and follow the matter through.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage project documentation from receipt through to completion.
- Monitor incoming drawings, technical documents, correspondence and project information.
- Identify actions arising from incoming information and promptly notify the relevant Project Manager or team member.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date document and drawing registers.
- Issue drawings, specifications, technical submissions and other project documentation.
- Manage document revisions and version control.
- Ensure superseded information is clearly identified and removed from circulation.
- Manage document workflows, reviews, approvals and returns.
- Proactively chase outstanding drawings, approvals, comments and information.
- Highlight missing information, potential issues and approaching deadlines.
- Keep Project Managers and the wider team informed of important project updates.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors and internal teams.
- Manage and prioritise document control requirements across multiple live projects.
- Produce and coordinate project handover documentation and O&M Manuals.
- Attend site and project meetings as required, typically at least once per week.
- Ensure actions and document requirements arising from meetings are followed through promptly.
- Help improve and develop BAU's document-control procedures as the business continues to grow.
What We Are Looking For
- Minimum of 3 years' experience as a Document Controller.
- Previous experience within construction, engineering or M&E.
- Experience using document-management systems such as Viewpoint, Procore, Asite, Aconex, SharePoint or similar.
- Strong understanding of document-control procedures, drawing registers, revisions and version control.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage several projects and competing priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Confidence to contact and chase Project Managers and other team members when action is required.
- Ability to manage your own workload and prioritise effectively.
- A proactive approach and confidence to use your own initiative.
- Ability to recognise when something needs action without waiting to be instructed.
- Someone who takes ownership of tasks and follows them through to completion.
We are not looking for someone who simply waits to be given tasks. We need someone who actively manages their responsibilities, recognises when something needs attention and keeps the wider project team informed.
Desirable Experience
- Experience producing O&M Manuals.
- Previous experience working for an M&E contractor or main contractor.
- Knowledge of construction handover procedures and project close-out documentation.
- Experience supporting several live construction projects simultaneously.
What We Offer
- £33,000–£37,000 per year, depending on experience.
- Up to 2 days per week working from home for the right person, once established in the role and subject to project and business requirements.
- Company pension.
- Free on-site parking.
- Company social events.
- The opportunity to become an important part of a growing M&E contractor.
- A role where you can take ownership, contribute ideas and help improve the way the business operates.
Location, Hybrid Working and Site Attendance
The role is based from our St Albans, Hertfordshire office.
For the right candidate, we are happy to offer up to 2 days per week working from home once established in the role.
As this is a project-based position, you will also be expected to attend site and project meetings, generally at least once per week, depending on the projects you are supporting.
The remaining working time will be based from our St Albans office.
Hybrid working is intended to provide flexibility, but the role requires someone who is visible, engaged with the project teams and available to attend office and site meetings when required.
Applicants should therefore make sure that regular travel to St Albans and project sites across London and the South East is practical for them before applying.
Interested?
If you are an experienced Document Controller who is organised, proactive, confident using your own initiative and enjoys taking ownership of your work, we would love to hear from you.
Please apply with your CV and details of your relevant construction or M&E document-control experience.
