Experienced Legal Aid Costs Draftsperson – Court of Protection & Public Law

£45,000 per annum | Fully Remote (UK) | Full-time, Permanent

Bison Solicitors Limited is seeking an experienced Legal Aid Costs Draftsperson to support our very busy Court of Protection and Public Law teams. The role is predominantly Court of Protection work and is suited to an experienced legal aid costs professional who can work independently from the outset.

This is not a trainee or junior billing role. Applicants must be fully confident with CCMS and experienced in dealing with Very High Cost Cases (VHCCs).

The Role

· Preparing and submitting civil legal aid bills and claims through CCMS.

· Managing costs limitations, amendments and funding increases throughout the life of a case.

· Managing VHCC and other high-cost matters, including registration, case plans, amendments and ongoing costs monitoring.

· Preparing Court of Protection and Public Law bills and reviewing files to maximise proper and reasonable costs recovery.

· Dealing with LAA queries, rejected claims, reductions, reassessments and appeals.

· Advising fee earners on costs, funding, disbursements, prior authorities and recoverability.

· Monitoring live cases to ensure funding and costs limits remain sufficient for anticipated work.

Essential Experience

· Substantial recent experience of civil legal aid costs.

· Strong and confident working knowledge of CCMS, with the ability to work without training or close supervision.

· Practical experience of VHCC/high-cost case planning and amendments.

· Court of Protection costs experience, preferably welfare proceedings.

· Good knowledge of LAA costs rules, assessment procedures and appeals/reassessments.

· Ability to manage a busy caseload accurately, independently and to strict deadlines.

Experience of Public Law/Judicial Review billing and CostsMaster or similar costs software would be advantageous.
