Full job description

We’re looking for an experienced Veterinary Care Assistant to join our growing team at Bramble & Bear Vets.

This role would suit an established VCA who is confident in a busy clinical environment, enjoys being actively involved in patient care and wants to develop their skills within a supportive, independent hospital.

We are a busy 24-hour small animal hospital, with veterinary surgeons and nursing staff on site overnight. Alongside routine first-opinion care, we see a large and varied emergency caseload, manage hospitalised patients around the clock and perform both routine and emergency procedures.

The role

As one of our VCAs, you’ll work closely alongside our vets and RVNs and play an important role in keeping the clinical team running smoothly.

Your responsibilities will include:

● Assisting vets and RVNs with the handling and restraint of patients

● Supporting the care and monitoring of hospitalised patients

● Preparing patients and clinical areas for procedures

● Assisting with emergency and urgent cases

● Supporting theatre preparation and turnaround

● Maintaining excellent standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control

● Preparing kennels and inpatient areas

● Cleaning and sterilising instruments and equipment

● Helping with laboratory samples and basic in-house testing where appropriately trained

● Stocking and maintaining clinical areas

● Supporting patient admissions and discharges

● Providing compassionate care to patients throughout their stay

● Communicating effectively with the wider clinical and front-of-house teams

We want our VCAs to be part of the clinical team, rather than simply working around it. For the right person, there will be plenty of opportunity to develop your practical skills and knowledge.

Who we’re looking for

We are specifically looking for someone with previous experience working as a VCA or in a similar veterinary clinical support role.

You should be:

● Confident handling dogs and cats

● Comfortable working around sick, injured and emergency patients

● Calm and useful when the hospital becomes busy

● Proactive - someone who sees what needs doing and gets involved

● Organised and reliable

● Compassionate with both patients and their owners

● Comfortable with the realities of veterinary medicine, including emergency care and end-of-life cases

● A genuine team player who communicates well with vets, nurses, VCAs and reception colleagues

● Keen to learn and continue developing

Previous experience within a hospital, emergency or inpatient environment would be particularly welcomed.

Why Bramble & Bear?

We’re proudly independent, which means we can make decisions based on what works for our patients, clients and team rather than following a corporate model.

We offer £0 consultations 24 hours a day and aim to make high-quality veterinary care accessible to the local community.

You’ll be joining a growing practice with a varied caseload, a genuinely hands-on clinical environment and opportunities to learn from experienced vets and nurses.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who wants to become a valued, long-term member of the team.

If you’re already working as a VCA and feel ready for a role where you can be more involved in patient care, we’d love to hear from you.

Please apply with your CV and a short introduction telling us about your veterinary experience and what you’re looking for in your next role.

Pay: From £12.71 per hour

Benefits:

  • Free parking
  • On-site parking

Application question(s):

  • Have you worked in a veterinary practice previously?
  • We expect our VCA team to be able to triage effectively! Please let me know when these cases should attend the practice - options are immediately, within 24 hours or within 2 days.

1. Dog limping for a week
2. Female cat straining on her litter tray
3. Male cat straining on his tray
4. French bulldog holding her eye closed.
