Full job description

Role Purpose

The Fire Door Technician is responsible for inspecting, assessing, maintaining, repairing and, where required, installing fire-resisting doorsets. The role requires a high standard of joinery workmanship and the competence to assess the condition of a doorset and identify the remedial works required to achieve the applicable standard.

Technicians must make their own assessment of the doorset as found on site and must not rely solely on a previous survey or schedule of works. Where the condition of the door requires additional, different or reduced works, this must be recorded and reported in accordance with RW Joinery procedures.

RW Joinery operates under recognised third-party certification arrangements, including BM TRADA Q-Mark. Previous experience specifically under BM TRADA/Q-Mark is desirable but not essential where suitable fire-door or joinery experience can be demonstrated and the required RW Joinery training and competency assessment is completed.

Key Responsibilities

Inspection, Assessment & Repair

  • Inspect and assess fire doorsets before commencing work, identifying defects and the remedial works required.
  • Use professional judgement and the applicable technical information when the works required differ from an earlier survey or schedule, recording and escalating discrepancies as necessary.
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance and repairs to door leaves, frames, seals, ironmongery and associated components within the Technician’s competence and authorised scope.
  • Where required and appropriately authorised, install or replace complete fire doorsets and associated components.
  • Ensure doors operate correctly on completion and that workmanship meets RW Joinery quality requirements.

BM TRADA / Q-Mark & Accepted Repair Techniques

  • Where applicable, work in accordance with BM TRADA Q-Mark requirements, RW Joinery procedures and relevant Accepted Repair Techniques (ARTs).
  • Use only approved repair methods, materials and components supported by the applicable ART, manufacturer information, certification evidence or other authorised technical information.
  • Technicians are expected to use their own knowledge and experience to assess the condition of the doorset and determine the remedial works required, which may differ from the original survey. Repairs must be undertaken using the appropriate approved repair method or ART where applicable. Where no approved repair method is available, the Technician should seek guidance before proceeding. Follow equivalent requirements where work is carried out under another recognised third-party fire-door certification scheme.

Records & Quality

  • Accurately record inspections, defects, repairs and completed works using the company’s digital recording system.
  • Provide clear before, during and after photographs, measurements and other evidence where required.
  • Ensure records accurately reflect the work undertaken and report any errors or discrepancies promptly.
  • Cooperate with internal quality checks, competency assessments and third-party certification audits.

Health, Safety & Site Conduct

  • Comply with RW Joinery Health & Safety procedures, RAMS, site rules, permits and PPE requirements.
  • Use tools, equipment and materials safely and only where trained and competent to do so.
  • Maintain a safe and tidy working area and protect surrounding finishes and property.
  • Act professionally and courteously when dealing with clients, residents, building users, colleagues and other trades.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Relevant practical experience in joinery, carpentry, doorset installation, fire-door maintenance or a comparable trade discipline.
  • Ability to independently assess the condition of a fire doorset and identify appropriate remedial works within the limits of competence and authorisation.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions, approved repair methods and quality procedures.
  • Valid CSCS card appropriate to the role/project, where required.
  • Ability to use mobile/digital systems to record and evidence works.
  • Willingness to undertake required training, competency assessments and travel to projects as required.

Desirable

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Carpentry and Joinery or equivalent trade qualification.
  • Previous fire-door installation, inspection, maintenance or repair experience.
  • Experience under BM TRADA Q-Mark, FIRAS, Certifire or another recognised third-party certification scheme.
  • Relevant fire-door, asbestos awareness, manual handling or other site training.

Competency & Authorisation

Appointment as a Fire Door Technician does not automatically authorise an individual to undertake every category of fire-door work. Technicians must only undertake work for which they are trained, competent and authorised, and must stop and seek guidance where work falls outside their competence, approved procedures or the available supporting evidence.

Summary

The Fire Door Technician is responsible for delivering safe, compliant and accurately recorded fire-door works to a high standard. The role requires practical joinery skill, sound judgement, attention to detail and the ability to assess each doorset as found, while working within approved repair methods and RW Joinery’s quality and certification procedures
