Full job description

Trainee HGV Driver / Drainage Operative – Company-Funded HGV Training

Company: RA Utility Solutions
Location: Liverpool base, with extensive working away across the UK
Job type: Full-time, permanent
Salary: £26,000 starting salary, increasing to £33,000 once HGV qualified and competent to operate independently

Gain your HGV licence and learn a practical trade — we’ll provide the training and fund your HGV course.

RA Utility Solutions is looking for a reliable, practical person to join our team as a Trainee HGV Driver / Drainage Operative.

You do not need an HGV licence or previous drainage experience to apply. You will work alongside experienced colleagues, learning how to use our equipment and carry out drainage work safely. We will also put you through a company-funded HGV course so you can progress into driving and operating our specialist tanker vehicles.

We undertake drainage cleaning, CCTV surveys and specialist works for commercial and construction clients throughout the UK.

Extensive working away is a core requirement of this role. Although based in Liverpool, you will regularly travel to projects across the country and stay away from home overnight, including for multiple nights at a time. Applicants must be comfortable with this commitment.

What you’ll be doing

  • Working alongside our drainage and survey teams on customer sites across the UK.
  • Learning to operate specialist JetVac tanker, vacuum and high-pressure water jetting equipment.
  • Assisting with drain cleaning, blockage clearance and the removal of silt and debris.
  • Handling hoses, tools and equipment, and keeping work areas safe and tidy.
  • Learning vehicle checks, equipment care and the completion of job records.
  • Progressing to driving and operating our HGV vehicles once qualified and competent.

This is an active, hands-on role combining driving with site work. You should be comfortable working outdoors, handling equipment and working around drains and wastewater.

What we’re looking for

  • A full UK car driving licence.
  • Willingness and availability for extensive working away and regular overnight stays.
  • Flexibility for early starts and out-of-hours work when required.
  • Reliability, punctuality and a willingness to learn.
  • A practical approach and care when using vehicles and equipment.
  • The ability to carry out the physical tasks involved safely.
  • Good teamwork and a professional manner with customers.
  • Someone looking to build a long-term career with the company.

Experience in labouring, construction, driving, groundwork, drainage or mechanical work would be useful, but is not essential.

What we offer

  • £26,000 starting salary, increasing to £33,000 once you hold your HGV qualification and have demonstrated competence to operate independently.
  • A company-funded HGV training course and support to gain your licence.
  • Practical training on specialist drainage and tanker equipment.
  • Support from experienced drivers and operatives.
  • A clear route into a skilled HGV driver / operator role.
  • Varied work across sites and projects throughout the UK.

How to apply

Apply through Indeed with your CV and a short note explaining why the role interests you. Please include your current driving licence category, when you would be available to start, and confirmation that you are comfortable with extensive working away.

No HGV licence yet? That’s fine — we’re looking for the right person to train.

Pay: £26,000.00-£33,000.00 per year
