Full job description

Help Shape the Future of Primary Care Research.

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated and forward-thinking Registered Nurse to join our team.

As our Practice embarks on an exciting expansion into commercial clinical research, we are looking for a nurse who is passionate about delivering outstanding patient care, while helping to bring innovative new treatments and technologies to our local community in Ely and the surrounding villages.

Initially, this role will combine traditional Practice Nursing responsibilities with dedicated research activity. As our commercial research portfolio grows, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to transition into a predominantly, and ultimately fully, research-focused position.

This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in building an exciting new service from the ground up and to develop specialist skills within one of the fastest-growing areas of primary care.

About the Role

Working alongside our GP Partners and Practice Management Team, you will support the delivery of high-quality commercial clinical research studies whilst continuing to provide excellent nursing care to our registered patients.

Your responsibilities will evolve as the research programme develops.

Initially you will:

  • Deliver routine Practice Nursing clinics including chronic disease management, cervical screening, immunisations, wound care and other nursing duties according to your competencies.
  • Assist with the identification and recruitment of suitable patients for research studies.
  • Support the safe delivery of commercial clinical trials within Primary Care.
  • Obtain informed consent (following appropriate training and delegation).
  • Perform study-specific clinical procedures including observations, ECGs, venepuncture, sample processing and administration of investigational products where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate study documentation and electronic case report forms.
  • Ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), research governance and study protocols.
  • Liaise with commercial sponsors, Contract Research Organisations (CROs), NHS organisations and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Promote awareness of research opportunities across the Practice.

As the research programme expands, the balance of the role will increasingly shift towards dedicated commercial research activity.

About You

We are looking for someone who is:

  • A Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Passionate about improving patient care through research and innovation.
  • Highly organised with excellent attention to detail.
  • Able to communicate confidently with patients, colleagues and external stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Enthusiastic about developing new skills and helping establish a growing research service.

Desirable Experience

We would particularly welcome applicants with experience in:

  • General Practice Nursing.
  • Commercial clinical research.
  • NIHR portfolio studies.
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Venepuncture and sample handling.
  • ECG recording.
  • Chronic disease management.
  • SystmOne clinical system.

However, previous research experience is not essential. We are committed to supporting the right candidate with appropriate training and professional development.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to help build an exciting commercial research service from its inception.
  • A structured development pathway into a dedicated Research Nurse role.
  • Full Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training and ongoing research education.
  • Support to attend external research training and conferences.
  • Opportunities to work with leading pharmaceutical companies and research organisations.
  • A supportive multidisciplinary team committed to innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Access to continuing professional development and career progression.
