Escape Room Host and Performer

About Contained Liverpool

Contained Liverpool is a highly rated immersive escape-room venue with a horror twist. We create memorable, story-driven experiences designed to make customers think, laugh, panic and occasionally jump.

We are looking for reliable, confident and enthusiastic people to join our team as escape-room hosts and performers.

Important information before applying

This is a casual, irregular-hours role in which shifts are based on customer bookings.

  • Hours are not guaranteed.
  • Some weeks may offer approximately 2 to 6 hours.
  • Other weeks may offer more hours or no work.
  • Individual shifts are often between one and three hours.
  • Most work takes place during evenings and weekends.
  • Most shifts are offered at short notice because customers frequently book close to their game’s start time.
  • It is common for a shift to be offered approximately 90 minutes before it begins.
  • You are not required to accept every shift, but once you accept one, we need to be able to rely on you to attend and arrive on time.
  • Some days may include two separate shifts with an unpaid gap between them.
  • Shifts may finish at approximately 11:45pm.

This is not a typical fixed-hours part-time position. Please only apply if low and variable hours would suit you and you can regularly consider short-notice work.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over

Applicants must be aged 18 or over when employment begins.

This is because the role may involve working alone, closing the venue late at night and selling or supplying alcohol as part of your duties.

The role

You will help deliver the complete customer experience, from welcoming each group to resetting the rooms after their game.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Welcoming customers and checking them in
  • Delivering engaging safety briefings and game introductions
  • Performing and improvising in character
  • Creating suspense and delivering scares
  • Adapting your performance to different groups
  • Monitoring live escape-room games
  • Providing clues at the appropriate time
  • Managing groups and enforcing venue and safety rules
  • Selling or supplying alcohol in accordance with venue procedures
  • Resetting rooms accurately between games
  • Cleaning and maintaining the venue
  • Opening or closing the venue
  • Working independently after completing your training

Some shifts are busy and fast-paced. Quieter periods may involve cleaning, maintenance and preparing the venue for future bookings.

Acting and performance

Acting and performance are important parts of this role.

You must be comfortable:

  • Performing in character in front of groups
  • Speaking clearly and confidently
  • Improvising when customers react unexpectedly
  • Creating suspense and maintaining an immersive atmosphere
  • Delivering an energetic experience, even when working independently

Formal acting experience is helpful but not essential. Full training will be provided, but you must be enthusiastic about performing and willing to get into character.

Availability and travel

Weekend and evening availability is essential.

You must also:

  • Be comfortable working until approximately 11:45pm
  • Be able to travel reliably to and from Bootle L20 1AD
  • Be able to respond promptly when shifts are offered
  • Be able to regularly consider shifts offered approximately 90 minutes before they begin

You do not need to own a car, but your travel arrangements must be reliable, including after late shifts.

This role may work alongside study or another job, provided your other commitments still allow you to meet the availability and short-notice requirements.

What we are looking for

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Reliable, punctual and responsive
  • Friendly, confident and enthusiastic
  • Comfortable acting and improvising
  • Able to engage and manage groups
  • Calm and practical when something does not go to plan
  • Able to work independently
  • Attentive to detail
  • Comfortable enforcing rules when necessary
  • Willing to clean and reset rooms to a high standard
  • Interested in becoming part of a growing business

Helpful experience

Experience in any of the following areas would be useful but is not essential:

  • Acting, drama, theatre or performance
  • Scare attractions or immersive entertainment
  • Escape rooms
  • Hospitality or bar work
  • Customer service
  • Public speaking or presenting
  • Events or visitor attractions

Pay

Your basic hourly rate will be no less than the applicable National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage.

Where applicable to an irregular-hours worker, holiday pay will be paid in addition to basic pay and shown separately on payslips.

Wages are paid fortnightly in arrears.

Why join us?

  • A distinctive and entertaining working environment
  • Full training
  • Opportunities to develop hosting and performance skills
  • A friendly and supportive team
  • The opportunity to grow with the business as it expands

Suitable applicants will be invited to complete a short pre-interview questionnaire covering:

  • Weekend and evening availability
  • Short-notice availability
  • Travel arrangements
  • Acting and customer-facing confidence
  • Suitability for independent working

Please ensure the information in your application is accurate and up to date.
