Senior Environmental Health Officer – Private Sector Housing

Location: Wolverhampton
Rate: £350 a day
Contract: Temporary / Contract

We are looking for four experienced Senior Environmental Health Officers (SEHOs) to join a busy Private Sector Housing team in Wolverhampton.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Housing EHO with a strong enforcement background who can hit the ground running and manage complex casework with minimal supervision.

The Role

You will support a range of Private Sector Housing enforcement work, including:

  • Damp and mould investigations, including detailed property inspections and assessments.

  • Housing Act enforcement, including Improvement Notices, Emergency Remedial Action (ERA) and Emergency Prohibition Orders (EPO).

  • Serious disrepair investigations and enforcement.

  • HMO licensing, compliance inspections and proactive investigations.

  • Civil penalty and prosecution case preparation.

  • Illegal eviction and landlord harassment investigations.

  • Managing complex housing enforcement cases through to appropriate resolution.

  • Working with tenants, landlords, managing agents and other stakeholders.

High-Rise & Medium-Rise Experience

Ideally, one of the successful candidates will have experience working with high-rise and medium-rise residential buildings, including:

  • Building safety.

  • Fire safety considerations.

  • Inspection of communal and common areas.

  • Working with Responsible Persons and managing agents.

  • Identifying and addressing risks within residential buildings.

The Council is commencing a project reviewing fire safety in medium-rise accommodation across Wolverhampton, making this experience particularly valuable.

About You

You will be an experienced Environmental Health Officer with:

  • Strong and demonstrable Private Sector Housing experience.

  • Extensive housing enforcement experience.

  • Good knowledge of the Housing Act and associated enforcement powers.

  • Experience undertaking complex inspections and investigations.

  • Experience preparing enforcement and prosecution cases.

  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills.

  • Confidence dealing with challenging housing situations and stakeholders.

  • The ability to prioritise a busy workload and respond quickly to urgent cases.

Working Arrangements

The Council offers hybrid working, with the majority of the team working approximately 2–3 days per week in the office and the remainder from home.

Office attendance is encouraged as the team has apprentices who would benefit from the knowledge, support and experience of senior officers.

Important Requirement

Candidates must be available to conduct inspections in Wolverhampton five days per week.

Urgent cases can arise at short notice and may require an immediate response. Therefore, even when working from home, you must be able to travel into Wolverhampton Monday to Friday when required.

This is an essential requirement of the position.
