Environmental Officer
Leo Group is one of the leading specialists in processing animal by products.
A site-based role with emphasis on driving environmental awareness, ensuring compliance with Environmental Permits and legislation, and delivery of the site Environmental Management Systems.
Main duties and responsibilities
The day-to-day duties include, but are not limited to:
- Maintenance and continual improvement of the organisational Environmental Management System (EMS) to both permit requirements and ISO14001 standards.
- Support for the organisational Energy Management System (EnMS) to both UK energy scheme requirements and ISO50001 standards.
- · Ensuring adherence with site regulatory standards and legislation through environmental systems, review, and auditing.
- Promoting a culture of environmental awareness throughout the organisation through effective communication and strong relationships with key stakeholders. Input into environmental training and education.
- Engagement with external stakeholders, inclusive of regulators, contractors, project teams, suppliers, and local communities.
- Liaison with regulating bodies such as the Environment Agency, APHA and Local Authorities, along with utility and service providers.
- Reducing environmental risks and identification of opportunities for improvement related to premises, processes, and people.
- Root cause analysis, investigation and effective reporting of complaints, incidents, and near-misses. Actively driving improvement through timely and effective corrective / preventative action plans.
- Delivery and reporting of environmental monitoring systems, both periodic and continual, inclusive of on-site / off-site monitoring, testing, and sampling, as required by the Environmental Permit, site management systems and relevant legislation. A number of practical out-of-the-office tasks are a requirement.
- Ensuring accurate and compliant documentation is completed and retained at all times.
- Tracking and reporting of set KPI’s, targets and objectives as regards environmental incidents, non-compliances, waste / resource management and testing regimes.
- Communicating and advising the site team on environmental risks, impacts and emerging issues.
- Production of accurate and timely data analysis, written / verbal communications, and reports.
- Internal auditing against ISO14001 and ISO50001 standards.
- Key member of the site HSEQ and Energy teams.
- Effective preparation for, and attendance of, key meetings, from daily review meetings through to quarterly management review meetings.
- Upkeep and calibration of monitoring and testing equipment.
Qualifications & Experience
- Previous experience in an environmental or related role, preferably within a regulated / permitted industry and / or manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, regulation and permitting.
- Good understanding of ISO standards and management systems.
- Knowledge and understanding of odour abatement techniques (such as thermal oxidation, biofilters and chemical scrubbers) and effluent treatment plants.
- Clear understanding of the use of site KPI’s and contribution to achieving set targets ad objectives.
- Proficient with Excel, Word, and Power Point and examples of operational software.
- An understanding of UK Energy Schemes (ESOS, ETS, CCA, SECR) would be beneficial.
- Full driving licence essential.
