Full job description

Mental Health Teaching Assistant - SEMH - Surrey

£100 - £110 PAYE per day, weekly payment

Full-time (term time only), 8am - 4pm

September start

How many pupils have told you they were "fine" when everything about how they were sitting said otherwise? You already know the difference between a pupil being defiant and a pupil being overwhelmed; most people never learn to see it. And you know that the moment before a pupil shuts down completely is the moment that actually matters.

This SEN school in Surrey supports pupils aged 7 to 16 with autism, ADHD and SEMH. Many arrive with high anxiety, low confidence and past experiences that made school feel unsafe. Classes are small, 6 to 8 pupils, with a SEN Teacher and LSA working toward a 1:4 ratio. Candidates often travel from Guildford, Epsom, Reigate and Redhill.

Responsibilities:

  • Read the early signs of anxiety and dysregulation before they escalate
  • Support pupils to regulate, re-engage and rebuild confidence day by day
  • Work closely with SEN Teachers and therapy staff on each pupil's individual targets
  • Build the kind of trust that pupils have not always had reason to give adults

What you will need:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, anxiety or emotional dysregulation
  • Calm that holds under real pressure
  • A background in psychology, youth work, mentoring, care, or lived experience of SEND is welcome; school experience is not essential

If you already know how to spot the moment before a pupil shuts down, and you want to work somewhere that gives you the time and team to act on it, contact Heeji Moon at Parker Smith Inclusion before September places are confirmed.

Parker Smith Inclusion is a specialist SEND recruitment agency. We put people first, taking the time to get to know you and finding the right career opportunity. We recruit across a wide range of SEND settings for all career stages, including support staff, teachers, therapists, and senior leaders.
