Contract Type: Permanent
Salary: Grade E. SCP 11 £25,979 to SCP 16 £28,282
Hours: 36 Hours per Week, plus weekend and Bank Holiday call out when required
Working Pattern: Full Time; 5 days per week; Monday – Friday. Stand by rota basis for weekend and Bank Holiday funerals to meet religious/ethnic needs
Base Location: Tameside Cemeteries

A job opportunity has become available within Bereavement Services.
Post objective: to carry out grave-digging and exhumations by hand or mechanically and to ensure that graves are dug in accordance with the safe working arrangements to the specified size and depth in the correct position, prepared at the appropriate time to receive the coffin and reinstated after the interment and to liaise with mourners and visitors to the cemeteries. To liaise with funeral directors and clergy ensuring all funerals take place respectfully and safely.
The post-holder will be responsible for:
1. In accordance with the Departments Health & Safety Policy and safe working arrangements to dig graves, foundations etc. by hand or mechanically, to the size, depth and in the position specified by the Registrar, in accordance with the grave ticket or work note. To carry out exhumations as and when necessary.
2. To transport the mini-excavator, dumpers and other equipment to different cemetery locations within the borough in order to meet the demands of the service.
3. To ensure that graves are prepared and dressed with grave mats etc. and are in a suitable condition to receive the coffin at the time specified for the interment in accordance with all risk assessments and ensure all interments/exhumations take place respectfully and in a safe manner.
4. To reinstate the grave and surrounding area after the interment, and to level graves when sunk.
5. To inspect memorials for stability and to construct foundations, re-erect memorials and carry out repairs on memorials as instructed.
6. To carry out basic maintenance work within the cemeteries e.g. flagging, kerbing, fencing, sweeping paths, fixing memorial benches and memorials etc.
7. To provide cover in the crematorium chapel when required in order to meet the demands of the service.
8. To carry out such other duties as reasonably correspond to the general character of the post.
