Full job description

Landscape Estimator / Surveyor – Freelance / Self-EmployedGolden Hive Landscapes – Camberley / Surrey, Berkshire & Hampshire£270–£350 per day, depending on experience

Golden Hive Landscapes is looking for an experienced Landscape Estimator / Surveyor to join us initially on a freelance / self-employed basis.

This is not a general construction estimating role. I am specifically looking for someone who understands residential landscaping from the initial customer survey through to producing a complete, realistic cost for delivering the project.

The right person will be comfortable attending customers’ properties independently, understanding what they want to achieve, measuring and surveying the site, identifying potential problems and then producing a detailed estimate that accounts for the true cost of completing the job properly from start to finish.

The role will include:

  • Attending residential customers across Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire Carrying out detailed site surveys, measurements and levels Discussing the proposed project directly with the customer Breaking projects down into individual work packages Preparing accurate quantities and Bills of Quantities where appropriate Obtaining and comparing supplier and subcontractor quotations Calculating realistic labour requirements and project durations Pricing skilled landscapers, labourers, site supervision and agency labour Pricing materials, plant hire, deliveries, fuel, waste, grabs and skips Identifying specialist subcontractors where required Allowing realistic contingency for access, ground conditions, weather and project risk Understanding relevant planning, drainage and Building Regulations considerations Working to high professional landscaping standards, including relevant APL/BALI/British Standard guidance where applicable Producing a clear true all-in cost for each project Preparing a complete handover package for the Site Foreman once a project is secured Reviewing estimated versus actual costs after completion to continuously improve pricing accuracy

Projects may include:

  • Porcelain and natural stone patios Block paving and driveways Groundworks and excavation Drainage and SuDS Retaining walls and garden walls Steps and level changes Fencing and gates Decking and pergolas Turfing and lawn construction Planting and soft landscaping Irrigation Garden lighting Garden rooms / structures Outdoor kitchens Full garden transformations

The person I am looking for:

You should ideally have previous estimating, surveying or commercial experience specifically within landscaping or landscape construction.

You must be comfortable working independently and taking ownership of an estimate rather than relying on someone else to rebuild or check every element of the job.

You should be commercially aware, extremely thorough and confident dealing directly with homeowners, suppliers, subcontractors and our site team.

A strong understanding of how landscaping projects are physically constructed is essential. I am looking for someone who understands not only what something costs, but how it will actually be built on site.

You should also have:

  • Strong numerical and estimating ability Excellent attention to detail Good communication skills Confidence dealing with customers face-to-face Ability to read drawings and specifications Good knowledge of landscaping materials and construction methods Understanding of labour, plant and project programming Full UK driving licence Own vehicle initially Ability to travel throughout our operating area

How Golden Hive operates

Golden Hive is being built as a professionally managed landscaping company rather than an owner-operated landscaping crew.

The Estimator / Surveyor will own the estimating and surveying function. Our Site Foreman will own project delivery, labour and quality on site. The founder will oversee commercial decisions, growth and the overall business.

I am therefore looking for someone who wants to become an important part of the structure of the company rather than simply price the occasional drawing.

The position will initially be freelance / self-employed and project-based, with the potential to develop into a much larger role as Golden Hive Landscapes grows.

Pay: £300–£350 per day depending on landscaping experience and capability.

If you apply, please include details of your previous landscaping estimating/surveying experience and examples of the types and values of landscaping projects you have previously priced.

Pay: £270.00-£350.00 per day

Application question(s):

  • Do you have experience obtaining supplier/subcontractor quotations and producing a true all-in project cost rather than only measuring from prepared drawings?
  • Are you confident attending a homeowner’s property alone, surveying the garden, discussing their requirements and producing a complete estimate afterwards?
  • Have you personally priced complete landscaping projects including labour, materials, plant, waste, drainage and subcontractors?
  • Do you have your own vehicle and are you willing to travel across Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire for customer surveys?

Experience:

  • Estimating/ Surveying : 2 years (preferred)

Work Location: On the road
