Why Arup?
Arup’s advanced approach to fire engineering means that we rise to the challenges posed by all types of structures. Whether providing code consultancy, strategic advice, fire prevention through specialised fire safety design, construction supervision, inspection and risk assessment, or post-fire recovery, our work is grounded in fire science. We provide insight into risk and human behaviour, advanced techniques in simulation and analysis and international investment in research to stay at the forefront of fire engineering.
Our Public Health Engineering team within the Buildings team regularly support the Fire Safety team, aligning to the fire strategy via the delivery of fire suppression system designs on buildings. Our team deliver projects across a wide range of sectors including commercial, property, science and industry, and education. As we continue to grow and strengthen our technical capabilities, we are seeking a Senior Fire Protection Systems Engineer to join our team.
The Opportunity
We have an opportunity for a Senior Fire Protection Systems Engineer who is chartered, or currently working towards chartership status and looking for technically challenging work on cutting-edge projects to join our established building services team in Cardiff, Birmingham, Nottingham or Bristol. We are looking for someone who can provide a combination of fire and safety technical skills to our projects in the UK and Worldwide. The role will interface with a multi-disciplinary services design team, and you will be required to take a lead design role for fire safety systems: both standalone and multi-disciplinary projects. You will work with architects and other systems engineers to develop combined system designs which consider aesthetics as well as being technically correct and code-compliant. Translate Client requirements into an appropriate and clear project delivery approach, making sound decisions and communicating effectively at all levels both internally and externally. In partnership with the Group Discipline Leader, assist the ongoing development of a high performing engineering team by dissemination of knowledge to other engineers throughout the firm.
A key focus of the role is lead and deliver the fire protection services on science and mission-critical environments such as healthcare, data centres and industrial facilities. You will play a central role in advancing the team’s technical capabilities in this area, helping to build a strong reputation for excellence.
Is this role right for you?
You will demonstrate a level of experience in the design and implementation of fire supressing/extinguishing systems, fire detection systems, smoke clearance and control systems and risk/hazard mitigation. You will be responsible for the overall design, technical delivery, quality and/or management of fire protection systems design of small to large, complex projects, co-ordinating with other design team members and project stakeholders. You will provide information on fire protection design to other engineers within the company, conduct design reviews, and assist in the development of junior engineers. As a senior engineer you will have strong knowledge of appropriate sector specific legislation, code requirements and design guidance. Demonstrated experience with any of the following key standards where used for fire protection design: British / European standards, NFPA, Factory Mutual Data Sheets.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.
You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Requirements
A degree in Engineering, Building Services, or a related field, with Chartered Engineer status (or close to becoming chartered) with a recognized institution such as IMechE or CIBSE.
Capable of undertaking fire protection system design from Concept to Contract issue, including undertaking fire suppression hydraulic calculations.
Proven track record of working on multiple projects concurrently, working to tight deadlines, and managing multiple priorities.
Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety legislation & CDM, plus a commitment to safe working practices.
Have experience in the process of developing risk assessments (DSEAR, HAZID, HAZOP) to help ensure projects provide a reasonably safe place to work. An understanding of process control diagrams and chemistry would be useful for forming risk assessments.
A good understanding of BIM and experience with using advanced modelling software such as Revit.
Skills in project and team management, including mentoring, workload coordination, and financial oversight.
