Full job description

We are delighted to be assisting Peterhead Port Authority with their new roles at the Fish Market on a temporary basis.

Hours of work: Monday - Friday 3 hours in the morning after the live auction.

This position is ideally suited to someone with practical fish industry experience who can confidently identify fish species and products. The role provides an important link in the electronic auction process, helping ensure lots are accurately allocated to the correct buyers.

Training will be provided, making it suitable for retired or semi-retired individuals with a background in fishing or fish processing who are seeking part-time morning work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Allocate buyers' tickets to fish lots produced from the mobile printers.
  • Verify that tickets are attached to the correct lots during the auction.
  • Identify fish species and products accurately to support correct allocation.
  • Work closely with market staff to ensure efficient allocation of auction lots.
  • Maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Report any discrepancies or issues to the relevant supervisor.
  • Assist in ensuring the smooth operation of the electronic auction process.

Essential skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • A working knowledge of the fish market / fishing processing industry.
  • Ability to identify common fish species by sight.
  • Reliable, punctual, and capable of working as part of a team.
  • Good attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Comfortable working in a fish market environment.
  • Previous experience as a fisherman, fish processor, fish market worker, or within the seafood industry is desirable but not essential.
  • Strong observational skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently under time constraints.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Practical and organised approach to work.
  • Dependable and flexible attitude.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work on the fish market floor in a chilled environment.
  • Ability to walk and stand for the duration of the shift.
  • Compliance with all site health and safety requirements.

Full training will be provided on:

  • Use of mobile printing equipment.
  • Electronic auction procedures.
  • Ticket allocation processes.
  • Relevant market operating procedures.

Pay: £16.07 per hour
