The Planner magazine

Maternity cover for 12 months (part-time or contractor arrangements considered)
  • Ever wondered about the impact of green belt policy on the UK’s housing crisis?
  • How about the health ramifications of poorly designed environments?
  • A bit nerdy about local government reorganisation and the extent to which it might alter the built landscape of England?
  • Want to write about one of the most politically charged, influential and downright interesting professional sectors in the UK?
The Planner, the leading magazine and website for town planners, placemakers and urbanists, is seeking an experienced news writer/editor to cover maternity leave. This role is flexible for the right candidate and part-time or contractor arrangements would be considered.

If you’re a solid news writer with strong newsgathering skills and proven experience of writing about planning/politics/the built environment, we’d like to hear from you. We prefer NCTJ qualifications, but it’s not going to be a sticking point if your portfolio is strong. Good proofreading skills are very useful and it’ll also be very handy if you’re accustomed to uploading content to a website CMS. Some knowledge of InDesign would be helpful.

Key responsibilities:
  • Source and write daily news stories
  • Oversee production of one/two weekly newsletters
  • Compile news section of bimonthly magazine
  • Upload stories to website (style guide provided)
  • Plan and commission or write bimonthly long-form news analysis for magazine
  • Prepare LinkedIn posts highlighting fresh stories
  • Attend and report on events as and when required, including in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
We offer a mix of office (we are based in Clerkenwell, London) and home working and you’ll be required to go to occasional events. You can expect a friendly, collegiate working environment, as well as the opportunity to build your contacts, knowledge and portfolio in one of the UK’s most politically charged and influential professional sectors.

The position is available from 22 June and we’ll be interviewing as and when we receive applications. Our aim is to fill the role quickly and get you on the team as soon as we can.

About The Planner
The Planner is the member magazine for the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and is circulated to the Institute’s 27,000 members in the UK and overseas, plus a variety of other subscribers with an interest in the built environment.

We have a free hand to cover anything and everything to do with planning and placemaking across the whole of the UK, from planning legislation and politics to the impact of urban environments on health and even the role of art and music in expressing feelings about planning and place.

Our magazine is published bimonthly and is renowned for the quality of its features, news and opinion, and for its striking design. It’s a must-read digest for planners of all stripes.

Our website (www.theplanner.co.uk) is updated daily and carries the latest planning news. We publish three email newsletters a week, attend and report on key planning
events around the UK and record a monthly podcast about planning. We also publish the annual Women of Influence list and host a reception to celebrate the impact of women on the planning sector.

The magazine is published on behalf of the RTPI by Redactive Publishing Ltd, an employee-owned, multiple award-winning publishing agency that works exclusively with membership organisations.

To apply
Please apply by including your CV and a concise covering letter explaining why you are the right candidate for this position.
