Train from the ground up in an accredited materials testing laboratory, learning wet chemistry, sample preparation and analytical techniques including ICP and LECO.

No laboratory career yet? You need some hands-on lab experience and the willingness to learn the rest properly.

About the role
An established, accredited materials testing laboratory in Banbury is looking for a Trainee Laboratory Technician to join its small technical team. The lab tests metallic samples for clients across aerospace, automotive and precision engineering, and works to strict accredited procedures on every job.
This is a trainee position. Full training is given. You will start by supporting the wet lab and sample preparation, and build towards the analytical instrumentation as your technical ability grows.

What you'll do
  • Prepare and handle metallic samples for laboratory testing
  • Support wet chemistry and analytical chemistry processes
  • Work with acids, chemicals and reagents under supervision, in line with COSHH
  • Use balances, pipettes, glassware and laboratory equipment accurately and safely
  • Follow written laboratory methods and procedures exactly
  • Support sample preparation for chemical analysis, including acid digestion
  • Record results accurately and maintain full traceability
  • Support testing connected to ICP-OES, ICP-MS, OES and LECO combustion analysis
  • Clean, check and maintain laboratory equipment
  • Flag unusual results, errors or non-conformities to senior staff

What you'll bring
  • Hands-on laboratory experience. School or college lab, quality control, food, environmental, pharmaceutical, water, biomedical or forensic. A placement, a summer job or a research post all count
  • Confidence with practical bench work: weighing, measuring, pipetting, preparing samples
  • The ability to follow a written procedure precisely, every time
  • Genuine willingness to work with acids, chemicals and reagents
  • Accuracy, tidiness and a safety-first approach
  • A reliable attendance and timekeeping record
  • Comfort with repetitive laboratory work done to a consistent standard
  • Willingness to work an alternating shift pattern from day one
  • A science qualification in chemistry, forensic science, biomedical science or a related discipline is welcome but not required
Any exposure to acid digestion, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, OES, LECO, GLP, GMP or an ISO 17025 accredited environment is useful, though full training is given.
