The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Business has an international reputation for excellent teaching and topical research, particularly in addressing global challenges in energy, the environment, health care, technology, forensic science and infrastructure.

As a key appointment we are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Research Assistant. This is an analytical chemistry role, focused on the sample processing, chemical analysis, and generation of high-quality data in support of national drug checking, monitoring and associated chemical and toxicological research activities.

Your priorities will include:

  • Undertake routine qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis of samples suspected to contain controlled substances using established analytical methods
  • Maintain clear, accurate and detailed analytical records, databases, and documentation associated with sample analysis
  • Work in compliance with Home Office Controlled Drugs licence requirements, including secure handling, storage, and documentation of controlled substances
  • Receipt and preparation of samples for laboratory chemical analysis, submitted to the NTRL in accordance with established protocols and governance requirements
  • Contribute to the interpretation and reporting of analytical results for internal use and onward communication through established project channels

Who we're looking for:

Essential

  • Educated to BSc or MSc level in analytical chemistry or a closely related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR, and IMS instrumentation
  • Practical experience of the chemical analysis of drug samples
  • Ability to work accurately and methodically, maintaining detailed records and high standards of data quality and record keeping

Desirable

  • Familiarity with drug checking or drug monitoring contexts
  • Experience of working with complex or mixed substance samples
  • Awareness of emerging trends in illicit drug markets
  • Experience contributing to research reports or publications
