Psychiatric Registrar (Advanced Training / Psychiatry Trainees)

Melbourne, Australia | UK Recruitment Tour

  • Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
  • Employer: Forensicare – Victoria’s Specialist Forensic Mental Health Service
  • Salary: $129,048.40 (HM25) to $177,622.12(HM30) AUD + 12.5% Superannuation (Pension) + Allowances (based on experience)

Looking for a Unique Psychiatry Training Experience?

What if your next training post offered more than another rotation?

What if it provided exposure to:

  • Forensic Psychiatry
  • Prison Mental Health
  • Secure Inpatient Services
  • Community Forensic Mental Health
  • Court and Justice-Related Mental Health Services
  • Advanced multidisciplinary practice

Forensicare is Victoria's statewide forensic mental health service, and we're travelling to London in September 2026 to meet Psychiatry Trainees and Registrars interested in advancing their careers in Australia.

Train in One of Australia's Leading Forensic Mental Health Services

Forensicare provides specialist forensic mental health services across:

  • Thomas Embling Hospital
  • Community Forensic Mental Health Services
  • Victorian Prison Mental Health Services
  • Court Liaison and Specialist Programs

Registrars rotate across inpatient, prison and community settings, gaining highly sought-after experience in complex psychiatry, risk assessment, recovery-focused care and medico-legal practice.

A Rare Opportunity to Join a Growing Service

Forensicare is currently undertaking one of the largest expansions in its history.

Thomas Embling Hospital is expanding from 136 beds to 218 beds, with the addition of six new inpatient units and 82 additional beds over the coming years.

This growth is creating exciting training and career development opportunities for Registrars seeking exposure to complex presentations and specialist forensic mental health practice.

You'll be joining an organisation investing heavily in its future workforce and expanding opportunities for career progression.

Why Choose Forensic Psychiatry?

Forensic Psychiatry offers a unique opportunity to develop expertise in:

  • Complex mental illness
  • Violence and risk assessment
  • Criminal justice and mental health interfaces
  • Court reporting
  • Recovery-oriented treatment planning
  • Leadership within multidisciplinary teams

You'll develop advanced assessment and formulation skills while working with some of the most complex consumers in the mental health system.

Exceptional Training Opportunities

At Forensicare, Registrars:

  • Work closely with experienced Consultant Psychiatrists
  • Participate in supervised forensic assessments
  • Develop medico-legal report writing skills
  • Present to Mental Health Tribunals and review bodies
  • Participate in education, research and quality improvement activities
  • Access Advanced Training opportunities aligned with RANZCP requirements

Registrars are supported to undertake ongoing education and professional development, including research and scholarly activities.

Work Alongside Highly Skilled Multidisciplinary Teams

Unlike many health services, Forensicare's workforce is built around qualified mental health professionals.

You will work alongside:

  • Consultant Psychiatrists
  • Psychiatry Registrars
  • Registered Mental Health Nurses
  • Clinical Psychologists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Social Workers
  • Allied Health Professionals
  • Lived Experience Practitioners

This collaborative approach provides exceptional learning opportunities and comprehensive support for trainees.

UK Trainees Encouraged to Apply

We are particularly interested in hearing from:

  • Core Trainees
  • Higher Trainees
  • Specialty Registrars
  • Doctors who have completed Psychiatry Basic Training
  • Doctors interested in pursuing a career in Forensic Psychiatry

Ideal candidates will have completed psychiatry training requirements equivalent to RANZCP Basic Training and be eligible for registration in Australia.

AHPRA Registration Support

Recent reforms have introduced new fast-track registration pathways for eligible international medical specialists and trainee doctors, reducing barriers to relocation.

Our dedicated Medical Workforce team will support candidates through:

  • AHPRA registration requirements
  • Visa sponsorship processes
  • Relocation Support - Up to $10,000 AUD
  • Settlement in Melbourne

We understand the process can seem daunting and will provide guidance at every stage.

Why Melbourne?

Imagine finishing work and enjoying:

  • A better climate
  • Beaches and coastal escapes
  • World-renowned food and wine regions
  • Premier sporting events
  • Easy access to New Zealand and Asia

Melbourne consistently ranks among the world's most liveable cities and offers an outstanding quality of life for healthcare professionals and their families.
