Full job description

About the company:

This role is with Expert Insights (expertinsights.com), an established B2B cybersecurity research platform read by over a million businesses a year. We're launching a new title, CISO Voice (so you won't find it online yet). That's the opportunity: you'd be joining a credible, growingcompany to help build a publication from its very first issue.

Engagement: Freelance, ongoing. Roughly 20 articles a month (the daily story, Monday to Friday), with scope to grow. Monthly retainer or per-article rate by agreement. Potential to convert to a permanent role.

Interview process

1. Telephone interview (30 mins)

2. Paid trial — a short live news shift (write to deadline against a real day's news)

About CISO Voice

CISO Voice is a new daily news publication for senior security leaders, CISOs, VPs and Directors of Security, and Heads of Security. It is the first purpose-built title in the Voice Media network, published by Expert Insights, a leading B2B cybersecurity research platform that helps over a million businesses a year make smarter decisions about cybersecurity.

Where the wider industry press writes for practitioners, CISO Voice is written for the person accountable to the board. We translate the day's cybersecurity news into what it means for risk, budget, regulation and strategy, a smart, sharp briefing a security leader can read in under a minute and walk into a board meeting fully informed. The model is the Financial Times: measured, authoritative, engaging.

The role

We're looking for a freelance cybersecurity journalist to be the reporting engine of CISO Voice from day one. Working directly with the Editor, you'll write the daily news story (one to two pieces a day) that anchors our daily email and website, covering the developments that matter to security leaders, framed for a leadership audience.

This is a rare chance to help launch a publication and shape its voice. You'll have real ownership of the daily report, a direct line to the Editor, and the backing of an established cybersecurity brand and its industry relationships.

Key responsibilities

  • Write one to two original news stories a day, on deadline, framed for senior security leaders - what a given breach, regulation, vendor move or market shift means for risk, budget and the boardroom
  • Work with the Editor each morning to commission the day's lead story and angle
  • Monitor industry feeds, press releases, regulatory developments and research reports to spot timely, high-impact stories
  • Develop and maintain relationships with CISOs, researchers, vendors, analysts and PR contacts to generate exclusives and expert commentary
  • Conduct interviews with security leaders and industry experts for quotes, features and Q&As
  • Occasionally provide on-the-ground coverage and interviews at major cybersecurity conferences and events
  • Meet our editorial standards for accuracy, tone, objectivity and the CISO Voice register

Essential skills

  • Proven news reporting experience, ideally in technology, business or cybersecurity journalism
  • Excellent writing: clear, sharp, engaging, and able to make complex topics accessible to a senior audience
  • Strong news judgement, knowing which stories a security leader must know about, and which to skip
  • Able to write accurately and to a daily deadline, working independently and remotely
  • A confident interviewer comfortable engaging senior industry professionals
  • Curious and inquisitive, with a genuine interest in the cybersecurity industry
  • Existing cybersecurity sources and contacts are a strong advantage

Education and experience

  • Experience in a newsroom, trade publication or B2B editorial environment
  • Degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity, technology policy or enterprise IT preferred; a willingness to get up to speed quickly is essential

Practicalities

  • Location: Remote. UK-based strongly preferred so the daily story is filed in the UK morning, ahead of a US-centred readership.
  • Hours: A daily news shift, Monday to Friday, with copy filed by late morning UK time. Flexible on exact pattern by agreement.
  • Reporting to: Editor, CISO Voice.

Why CISO Voice

  • Build something from the start. Help launch a new publication and shape its voice, your byline, your sources, real ownership of the daily report.
  • Backed by an established brand. The reach, relationships and credibility of Expert Insights behind a fresh, focused title.
  • Access. A direct line to senior security leaders, industry events, and the conversations shaping the market.
  • Room to grow. As the title grows, so can the role, including the potential to convert to a permanent position.

To apply: please send a CV and two or three examples of your news writing (cybersecurity or technology preferred). A short covering note on why this role interests you is welcome.

Pay: From £1,500.00 per month
