Full job description

About Mercia Garden Products:

We began in 1878, making beehives. Nearly 150 years on, we're the UK's longest serving garden buildings manufacturer and we've never stopped making things ourselves. From our factory here in the UK come the sheds, log cabins, summerhouses and garden play that our customers treasure for years.

We're now entering the most ambitious chapter in our storied history. We've broadened our range as more people look to make something special of the space outside their back door, and we're investing in the growth to match. To get there, we're building a team of best in class people, those who bring vision, raise the standard, and want to help shape what we become next.

About the Role:

Today our Shopify store is good. We want it to be exceptional, and we want someone whose whole job is to make it so week in, week out. We are not looking to hand this to an agency and check in quarterly. We want the capability in house: someone who lives in the store, knows every template and theme section, understands how a customer moves from first click to delivered product, and is relentlessly improving conversion, speed, merchandising and experience. This is a build and ship role, not a brief-and-wait one. We need a developer who designs, codes, tests and deploys and treats our storefront as a product they own and continually raise the bar on.

About the role

You will own our Shopify storefront end to end: the design, the front-end build, the integrations, the performance and the roadmap of improvements that keep it ahead. You will work closely with our Head of AI, marketing and operations so the store reflects how the business actually runs accurate stock, honest delivery promises, and a checkout that converts.

It is a rare remit for a developer genuine ownership of a high-volume, revenue-critical store, room to set the standard rather than maintain someone else's, and the backing of a profitable, long-established brand that is serious about its next chapter. The right person will shape not just the code, but how customers experience a 147 year old brand online.

What you will bring;

Essential:

  • Strong, hands on Shopify theme development experience; Liquid, HTML, CSS and modern JavaScript with real stores you have built and shipped, not just maintained.
  • A genuine eye for design and UX, and the front end craft to deliver it to a high standard across devices.
  • Demonstrable focus on performance and conversion Core Web Vitals, page speed, mobile, checkout.
  • Solid grasp of technical SEO and structured data for e-commerce.
  • Comfortable with version control (Git), testing and safe deployment workflows.
  • Experience integrating third-party apps and working with the Shopify Storefront and Admin APIs.
  • Self-directed you find the improvements worth making and you ship them, without waiting for a detailed brief.

Desirable:

  • Shopify Plus experience, including checkout extensibility and Shopify Functions.
  • Experience with a modern commerce and data stack (e.g. Klaviyo, GA4, reviews platforms, Microsoft 365 / Business Central, or similar).
  • Familiarity with headless / Hydrogen or a framework such as React, where it earns its place.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, retail or consumer DTC business selling physical products at scale.
  • An interest in AI-assisted development and in using AI to improve the storefront experience

If you're a driven individual who wants to be part of a business on an ambitious growth journey, this role offers real opportunity to develop and progress as we do. Apply now!
