Full job description
We are seeking a creative, talented & versatile Web Designer to join our multidisciplinary team.
You will sit within our design function, reporting to & working alongside our Senior Digital Designer.
You will be involved in projects from the first client conversation through to the creation of optimised, accessible code, taking initial prototypes into build, writing clean HTML5 & CSS3 that brings your designs to life.
If you are someone who enjoys creating data-driven, accessible and user-friendly designs from inception through to build, this role is for you.
We're a small, friendly team with a strong collaborative culture. At Connect, you'll have the opportunity to influence the work we do. Your ideas are heard, and good ideas come from our entire team.
As we're a multidisciplinary agency, you won't be confined to a single area of work. While you'll have a clear role, you'll also have the opportunity to explore, broaden your skills and get involved in projects that interest you.
We're proud that our focus on quality has resulted in a 100% repeat business rate, with many client relationships spanning more than two decades. We have 30+ years’ experience, delivering websites, mobile apps & bespoke software to some of the UK’s leading public sector organisations. Our clients include Government bodies, NHS, Housing associations, councils and charities.
As our clients serve millions of people across the UK, the designs and experiences you create will carry genuine purpose. Every design decision you make could improve how people access healthcare, local government, education and other essential public services.
Following a successful probationary period, you’ll have the option of working from home on Thursdays and Fridays, subject to operational needs. We offer flexible start times; staff can start anytime between 8:00 am and 10:00 am, finishing between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm respectively.
What you will be doing
- Creating designs from concept inception through to delivery: producing wireframes, interactive prototypes & mock-ups, then carrying those designs into a code-based build
- Writing clean, standards-compliant HTML5 & CSS3, building front-end interfaces that are fast, accessible & maintainable
- Ensuring all work meets WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards, with a confident understanding of what that means in practice and why it matters for our clients
- Contributing to and building on WordPress and Umbraco-based solutions, working within established CMS environments and extending them where needed – CMS training will be provided.
- Collaborating closely with our development function, bridging the gap between design intent and technical delivery
- Taking part in client-facing discovery sessions, with structured support provided to help you grow into facilitating these sessions with confidence in the future
- Keeping up to date with design trends, emerging technologies & evolving standards, and bringing fresh ideas and thinking to the team
- Other duties, as required
The individual we are looking for
Essential
- A minimum of two years’ experience in a digital design role, with a portfolio that demonstrates both creative quality and technical delivery
- Experience contributing to projects across the design lifecycle, from discovery through to front-end implementation.
- Proficiency in HTML5 & CSS3, with the ability to produce responsive interfaces
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a small, skilled team
A portfolio demonstrating your design work is essential. Please include a link to your portfolio or upload it when you apply. If you are unable to share your portfolio publicly, please let us know.
Desirable
We're looking for someone with strong foundations and a willingness to learn. If you don't meet every desirable criterion but feel you'd be a good fit, we'd still love to hear from you.
- Experience working in a digital agency, particularly in a public sector or regulated environment
- Hands-on experience with Figma or comparable prototyping tools
- Working knowledge of WCAG 2.2 and a practical understanding of how to design and build for accessibility, training will be provided
- Confidence in presenting, facilitating & communicating design decisions to non-technical audiences
- Experience in designing for content management systems, such as WordPress
- Knowledge of SASS or similar CSS preprocessors
- Working familiarity with Git fundamentals
- Familiarity with accessibility auditing tools and techniques
- A good degree or equivalent within a design, digital media or related discipline
The kind of person you are
You care about the quality of your work - not just how it looks, but how it works, who it is for & whether it will stand up once live. You’re interested in creating data-driven solutions to user problems.
You are inquisitive by nature - when a project brief lands, you ask the right questions. When a workshop ends, you go away and think carefully about what you have learnt and how it will influence the direction of the project.
You take ownership of your work from brief to delivery. When priorities shift, you adapt, bringing the same focus to a fast-turnaround request as you do to a months-long project.
You understand that good design in the public sector is not decoration, it is clarity, inclusion & function, and that motivates you to deliver your best work.
As you develop in future, we’ll support you to explore opportunities to lead client Discovery workshops, deepen your expertise in Accessibility, build your UX and UI knowledge and contribute to shaping our design processes.
