Funeral Director

Essential Funerals | Bockenfield Wood, Felton

Salary: £35,500 pro rata

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, plus participation in an out-of-hours/on-call rota

About the Role

Essential Funerals is looking for an experienced Funeral Director to join our team and provide compassionate, professional care to families and the deceased.

This is a rewarding, people-focused role combining family care, funeral arranging and conducting, mortuary care and professional responsibility. You will guide families through the funeral journey, from the initial arrangement meeting through to the funeral and aftercare, while ensuring that every person entrusted to our care is treated with dignity, respect and compassion.

Based at Bockenfield Wood, Felton, the role offers a unique opportunity to work closely with Northumberland Crematorium, with involvement across the complete journey of the deceased—from initial care and preparation through to the funeral, committal and memorialisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meet and support bereaved families, providing clear and compassionate guidance.
  • Arrange and conduct funerals to a high professional standard.
  • Discuss funeral options, costs, timings and personal requirements with families.
  • Lead arrangement meetings and maintain continuity of care throughout the funeral journey.
  • Carry out removals and oversee the care of the deceased.
  • Undertake mortuary care, coffin preparation and family viewings.
  • Lead funerals confidently and respond calmly to unexpected situations.
  • Liaise with Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium staff and other professional colleagues.
  • Provide appropriate post-funeral contact and guidance around ashes and memorialisation.
  • Work closely with the wider team to provide seamless care and clear handovers.
  • Participate in the out-of-hours/on-call rota.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Funeral Director who combines professional confidence and sound judgement with warmth, compassion and humility.

You will ideally have:

  • Previous experience as a Funeral Director.
  • Strong experience arranging and conducting funerals.
  • Experience working with bereaved families in sensitive circumstances.
  • Good knowledge of mortuary care and the care of the deceased.
  • Experience with removals, coffin preparation and family viewings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High standards of presentation, care and attention to detail.
  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a close-knit team.
  • The ability to remain calm and professional in challenging or unexpected situations.
  • A willingness to participate in an out-of-hours/on-call rota.

Most importantly, you will understand that funeral service is about caring for people. You will take pride in both the visible and quieter aspects of the role—from reassuring a family to ensuring that the deceased receives the highest standard of care.

Why Join Essential Funerals?

This is an opportunity for an experienced Funeral Director to take on a role with genuine professional responsibility in a distinctive funeral service environment.

You will have the opportunity to work across family care, funeral directing, mortuary care and crematorium services, while becoming part of a team committed to providing personal, dignified and seamless care.

If you are an experienced Funeral Director who takes pride in what you do and wants to make a meaningful difference to families at an important time in their lives, we would like to hear from you.
