Full job description

Due to our motor insurance terms for hire and reward drivers, you will ideally be aged between 25 and 69 , have a maximum of 6 points and have no AC, BA, CD, DD, DG, DR, IN, MS, TT or UT offence codes showing on your license to apply for this role.

Delivery Direct Logistics (DDL) are a Taunton based family business with contracts and operations around the UK. DDL was established in 1995 by the still current Managing Director, and specialise in temperature-controlled transport solutions.

All jobs are employed/PAYE, with a modern high spec vehicle and all associated costs provided by us.

The majority of items DDL collect and transport are either blood or water samples which we deliver direct to laboratories for analysis. All work is carried out driving hi specification Mercedes vans, and following processes that are quality driven by the exacting requirements demanded by governing bodies such as the Environment Agency and UKAS.

The samples we collect are both time and temperature sensitive and are irreplaceable if not delivered to the laboratory the next morning, or at the correct temperature. Each sample must be collected without fail each day. We are a small but specialised team so driver attendance reliability is paramount, as is following the well established standard operating processes.

This role is based from home and is for our direct, long-term contract with the Environment Agency. You will need to have parking (ideally off road) capable of fitting a Mercedes Vito van.

We have an immediate vacancy for one full time driver to work Monday to Friday afternoon/evenings and additionally, to be available for 1 weekend shift in every 4 weekends.

We are looking for a reliable and professional driver with an attention to detail, and the right appearance and attitude, to join a team of colleagues collecting and delivering temperature-controlled water samples from unmanned customer depots. You will typically cover the Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex areas but to cover holiday may be required to go as far as Devon and Kent.

Shift starts vary from 2pm to 5pm as we aim to be at the first collection point on each route by 5.30pm. At the start of each shift you will carry out a thorough vehicle check and ensure your van is clean both inside and outside ready for the shift.

All routes return to Reading between midnight and 1am latest, where collected samples will be transferred to a trunker van that will deliver samples onwards to the laboratory in Devon by 6am. On returning to Reading you will assist your colleagues with unloading, loading the trunker, and sorting consumables delivered to the depot by the night trunker which are for delivery the next day.

Due to the large geographic area we collect from, each route only stops at a collection or delivery point between 5 and 10 times a shift. Mileage driven per shift will typically be between 250 and 350 miles, with the occasional longer run touching 450 miles. All routes are comfortably achievable within van speed limits and breaks are factored into your shift at appropriate times - breaks are unpaid though.

This role does not necessitate carrying excessive weights but it does require a certain level of physicality. Each crate full of water samples could weigh 15kgs and there is a repetitive nature to the loading and unloading which is done by hand and does involve climbing in and out of the load area of the van. In a shift, you may load and unload 70 crates so you need to be reasonably nimble and quick in your movements to meet the timings of the routes. At every stop you will record data digitally and accurately, so you need to be adept with a smart phone and barcode scanner.

IMPORTANT – Before applying, applicants should take into consideration that DDL is contractually obliged to carry out a standard DBS criminal record check on all new recruits and will require the applicant’s permission to disclose any convictions to the trust.

Next Steps/Interviews

If we wish to proceed with your application, you will receive a message asking you to generate an online driving license check code.

Once we have checked your license, you may then receive an message or phone call to progress your application further - this is likely to be in the form of a video call via the indeed platform.

Shift pattern

Full time, 5 shifts per week (Monday to Friday), guaranteed a minimum of 35 hours; plus 1 weekend shift in every 4 week period or equivalent.

Monday to Friday hours of work range from starting between 14:00 & 17:00 and finishing between 00:00 and 02:00. Exact start and finish times will depend on your home location. Shifts are typically 7 to 9 hours but there may be the occasional need to start slightly earlier or finish slightly later. Generally, if you start earlier, you finish earlier and if you start later, you finish later but either way, you will not exceed the maximum legal working hours in a day which is 11 hours.

Shifts are planned weeks in advance and the weekend rota is on a 4 week repeat. That said, this is a service critical transport role so even with the best planning, changes happen and often they are at late notice. Flexibility is always essential as you may be required to cover other routes and working patterns during holidays/ sickness.

What we offer:

  • To be part of a close knit and high profile team working direct on long term contracts
  • £13.45 per hour from 06:00 to 21:00
  • £15.55 per hour from 21:00 to 06:00. Monday to Saturday
  • Hours worked on Sundays and Bank Holidays attract a 20% premium above the rate for Monday to Saturday. i.e. £16.14 / £18.66.
  • We pay by bacs every week but you are paid 2 weeks in arrears. i.e. week 1 will be paid at the end of week 3.
  • Employee benefits scheme including store discounts and access to on demand GP services.
  • We pay for all aspects of the vehicle and fuel.
  • Guaranteed minimum hours each week.
  • Full training, uniform and PPE etc provided.
  • Company contributed pension.
  • 28 days holiday for full time workers (pro rata).

What we need from you:

  • Reliable attendance and excellent time keeping – These are essential as you will be working in a small team covering specific timed runs. It is imperative that we collect blood samples on time, transport them at the correct temperature, and get them to the laboratory on schedule for analysing.
  • IT skills - Using a PDA and hand held scanner. If you can use a smart phone, that is sufficient. All driver instructions, routes and data capture is done a company smart phone we provide you.

Our vans are new and have highly visible distinctive signwriting – you are our company ambassadors on the road. There is no need to speed on any of our routes and speeding is not tolerated, along with any other poor driving, or mobile phone use when driving.
  • To treat the company vehicles with respect, and keep yours clean at all times.
  • All vehicles are equipped with full telematics monitoring and coaching driving behaviour. Part of this technology includes both forward and driver facing cameras, and cameras in the load area.
  • Driving license - No more than 6 points, and no AC, BA, CD, DD, DG, DR, IN, MS, TT or UT convictions showing on your license.
  • To embrace ours and our client's health and safety culture, particularly when driving by adhering to site instructions, site speed limits, and the highway code in general.
  • Temperature control - We specialise in temperature-controlled work, so previous experience in this field would be an advantage but not essential.
  • Good spoken and written English - In order to understand instructions and complete record keeping.
  • Manual handling - up to 20kg per item but 20kg is exceptional in this role. Typically each item averages between 10 and 15kg.
  • We are a non-smoking company and do not permit smoking or vaping in any of our vehicles or buildings. Given the role is handling samples that are going to a laboratory facility, it is expected that our drivers do not give off any odour of smoke during working time.
