Full job description

Our clients are a GP practice in Eltham looking for an innovative, multi-disciplined Business Manager to work closely with the Partners and take overall responsibility for operational leadership across the practice.

About Us

Eltham Medical Practice exists to deliver accessible, high-quality primary care to a diverse and growing community of over 26,000 patients (which makes us the second largest practice in the Borough of Greenwich, and we’re still growing). Across three well-equipped sites, we provide a wide range of services designed around patient needs, combining clinical excellence with a deeply rooted commitment to community wellbeing.

With a heritage that spans over 75 years, the practice has evolved from a single family-founded surgery into a leading, multi-site organisation at the heart of the Greenwich community.

We’re proud to be a training practice and to foster a culture of learning, innovation and support. Our mission is simple: to build a sustainable, forward-looking model of general practice that improves lives—both for our patients and for the professionals who work with us.

As a primary healthcare provider, our work has a direct and immediate impact on people’s lives. Join us to make a difference to thousands of patients’ daily lives.

About the Role

As Business Manager, you’ll oversee the daily running of the practice through a structured management team, and play a key role in improving efficiency, performance, and overall team culture. It’s a hands-on role that combines strategy, people management, and operational delivery, with a real opportunity to reshape how the practice runs and improve outcomes for patients.

Your day-to-day will be spent improving all non-clinical aspects of the practice. You’ll have the autonomy to make decisions and drive change that ensure we deliver the highest possible standards of care to our patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Operational Excellence
  • Overall strategic and operational leadership of the practice
  • Line management and development of the teams
  • Oversee daily business operations
  • Digital and traditional marketing to continue growth of our patient list
  • Ensure high standards of patient engagement and customer service
  • Managing procurement and facilities management
  • Improve operational resilience and business continuity plans
  • Optimise Infrastructure and Resources
  • Driving improvements in workflow, efficiency, and patient access
  • Coordinate organisational reporting and monitor KPIs
  • Manage IT systems at strategic and operational levels
  • Enhance People Operations
  • Leading on organisational development, team structure, and culture
  • Management of HR requirements, systems and outcomes
  • Recruitment and retention
  • Governance and Compliance
  • Ensuring compliance with CQC standards and regulatory requirements
  • Supporting financial performance and sustainability
  • Managing budgets and expenditure
  • Ensuring value for money

What success looks like (6–12 months)

  • Established a clear and effective management structure
  • Improved visibility, performance and accountability across all teams
  • Strengthened operational oversight and outcomes
  • Ensured better value for money across the teams
  • Built a more cohesive, professional, and aligned team culture

About You

You’re curious, confident, and thrive in an environment of supported autonomy working closely with the owners of the organisation to get things done. You’re optimistic, resilient, and are looking for something that gives you the independence to have ownership over what you do and how, in service of something meaningful.

You have:

  • Accountability for delivering professional standards
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams of 80+ people
  • Experience working closely with owners and senior leadership teams
  • Experience managing people to manage others
  • A reputation for being organised and structured in all things
  • Initiative, judgement, resourcefulness and common sense
  • Resilience and the ability to focus on the long-term view while delivering short-term projects
  • The ability to work effectively at both strategic and operational levels
  • A proven track record in service delivery, process improvement and change management
  • Experience of a range of disciplines, including Operations, Finance, HR and Customer Service
  • Curiosity, and a desire for continuous learning
  • Pride in your work, and in doing the best job you can

NHS experience is not required, and the ability to demonstrate knowledge of best practice and behaviours from outside the NHS is required. Our existing team have a wealth of NHS experience - you'll bring a different perspective to unlock additional opportunities.
