Senior Gardener / Garden Manager
Glenbervie Estate, Aberdeenshire | Live-in Position
Are you an experienced senior gardener with excellent horticultural knowledge and a passion for maintaining and developing beautiful gardens?
Glenbervie Estate is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Gardener / Garden Manager to join our small, dedicated garden team.
This is a rare opportunity to take a hands-on role in the care and continued development of an established 12-acre private garden, together with responsibility for overseeing the maintenance of a further 15 acres of Estate policies.
About the Garden
The garden is a diverse and established private garden featuring:
- A traditional walled garden
- Large heated greenhouse
- Woodland garden
- Herbaceous and shrub borders
- Roses and fruit
- Vegetable growing areas
- Extensive lawns
- Formal and informal garden areas
You will work closely with the Garden Owner, Head Gardener and Gardener, while also coordinating the work of two contractors responsible for areas of the wider Estate.
About the Role
This is a genuinely hands-on horticultural position, with responsibility for maintaining the garden to a high standard throughout the year and helping shape its future development.
Your role will include:
- Year-round maintenance and development of the formal and informal gardens.
- Managing the walled garden, including vegetable rotations, annuals, roses, fruit and borders.
- Propagation of annuals, vegetables and perennials.
- Caring for and developing the large heated greenhouse and its diverse plant collection.
- Plant health, pest and disease management.
- Lawn care and general garden maintenance.
- Planning seasonal planting and longer-term maintenance programmes.
- Managing and coordinating contractors working within the Estate policies.
- Operating and maintaining a wide range of garden machinery.
- Supporting garden open days and occasionally conducting garden tours.
About You
We are looking for someone who can bring strong practical horticultural skills, excellent plant knowledge and an eye for detail.
You will ideally have:
- At least 3–4 years' professional gardening experience, preferably within a private estate or large private garden.
- Excellent knowledge of plants and plant husbandry.
- Greenhouse and propagation experience.
- Knowledge of pest and disease control.
- Experience using a wide range of garden machinery.
- A flexible and practical approach to your work.
- Excellent communication skills.
- A full, clean driving licence.
Horticultural qualifications, PA1/PA6, chainsaw certification and First Aid would be advantageous.
A Great Opportunity
This is an opportunity to become an important part of the team caring for a beautiful and diverse private garden, with the freedom to contribute your own horticultural knowledge and ideas to its ongoing development.
Live-in accommodation is available on the Estate in a dedicated gardener's cottage.
If you are an experienced gardener who takes real pride in their work and is looking for a long-term opportunity where horticulture is genuinely at the heart of the role, we would love to hear from you.
