Full job description

Glamis Castle and Gardens is the ancestral home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne. It is a beautifully romantic Castle, and the gardens are an integral part of our visitor’s experience. Situated five miles west of Forfar and ten miles north of Dundee the Castle is part of the 14,500-acre Strathmore Estate which sits between the Sidlaw Hills and the Grampian Mountains.

Glamis Castle is one of the largest tourist attraction in Angus with over 118,000 visitors per year and many interesting outdoor events. The Castle grounds are home to a wide range of fauna including red squirrel, deer, otter and a wide range of birds.

The extensive gardens at Glamis include formal lawns, hedging an Italian garden, substantial perennial borders, woodlands, a pinetum and a productive walled garden.

The successful applicant must have practical and proven horticultural experience, Ideally with a relevant qualification. They will be able to demonstrate general expertise and sound knowledge of common gardening practices. They will be self-motivated, work well in a team as well as being able to work with minimum supervision.

Responsibilities and Duties

Assist in maintaining the gardens and grounds to the highest standard throughout the year.

Work under the guidance of the Head Gardener and with an established garden team.

Routine tasks associated with the maintenance of the grounds to include grass cutting, hedge trimming, weeding, mulching, leaf clearing, and path maintenance.

Seasonal planting, propagation, pruning, and soil preparation work is also a part of the requirement.

To assist with composting and other soil improvement work, maintaining good gardening practices that are 'sustainable'.

assist with pest and disease control, using environmentally friendly methods whenever possible.

Perform planned maintenance and safe operation of garden machinery and tools, reporting maintenance needs to others.

Participate in a high level of plant care and management.

Liaise with visitors answering there questions, providing information about the gardens, and aiding in tours and education sessions where requested.

Contribute to the Estate's aim for sustainability through biodiversity and nature conservation practices.

Assist with estate-wide activities, including but not limited to outdoor events and public functions, as required.

Comply with health and safety, including the use of PPE and safe use of tools and chemicals.

Report maintenance issues, breakages, or anything that may compromise safety promptly through the agreed procedure.

Cooperate with volunteers and provide guidance/support when required.

Requirements

Previous experience in a horticulture role or a recognised horticultural qualification.

Good plant knowledge/understanding and best practices in plant care and garden maintenance.

To be proficient in the use and basic maintenance of garden machinery such as mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, etc.

Full UK driving license

Positive health and safety attitude - willing to adhere to and follow safety guidelines and procedures.

Public facing experience welcome but not essential.

Able to work independently but also part of a close-knit team.

Good communication and interpersonal skills, combined with the ability to approach visitors in a friendly and approachable manner.

Good problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to seasonal changes in garden tasks.

Reliable and punctual work ethic; attention to detail in all tasks undertaken.

The ability to support all areas of castle, estate, and garden operations, including occasional non-gardening duties.

Accountability

The Garden Assistant reports directly to the Head Gardener and, in their absence, to the General Manager.

Liaison

The Garden Assistant will maintain close communication with:

· Head Gardener· Other Members of the Garden Team· Garden Volunteers
Administration and Maintenance

· Report maintenance issues, breakages or faults promptly using the agreed procedure.

· Report accidents and near misses as soon as possible to the head gardener.

Promotion and Engagement: Engage with visitors when needed including helping with garden tours and educational visits.
