Full job description

Groundsperson – Gardener

Full-time, Permanent (Single Accommodation may be available)

King’s Bruton is seeking an experienced, practical and enthusiastic Groundsperson – Gardener to join our Estates and Gardens team.

Reporting to the Head of Gardens, you will help maintain the School’s extensive grounds, gardens, lawns, sports pitches and outdoor spaces to a high standard. You will join a hardworking and friendly team, helping to ensure that the School environment remains safe, welcoming and well presented for pupils, staff and visitors.

This is a varied, hands-on role involving general grounds maintenance, gardening and support with the upkeep of sports facilities and equipment.

Main responsibilities

  • Carry out routine grounds maintenance, including mowing, strimming, edging, weeding, pruning and planting.
  • Maintain lawns, borders, gardens, pathways and landscaped areas.
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of sports pitches and outdoor playing areas.
  • Use grounds machinery and equipment safely, reporting faults or maintenance requirements.
  • Support seasonal work, School events and other duties across the Gardens and Estates team.
  • Work in line with the School’s health and safety procedures.

About you

You will be reliable, proactive and flexible, with a practical “can do” approach and pride in maintaining high-quality outdoor spaces.

You will ideally have experience in gardening, grounds maintenance, landscaping or sports-ground work, together with relevant training, qualifications or equivalent practical experience. You should be confident using grounds-maintenance tools and machinery safely, able to work well independently and as part of a team, and willing to work outdoors throughout the year.

Experience of working in a school or similar environment would be an advantage, but is not essential.

Hours and benefits

This is a full-time, permanent role working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between 8.00am and 4.30pm.

King’s Bruton offers a supportive working environment in a beautiful Somerset setting, with the opportunity to play an important part in the daily life of a leading independent co-educational boarding and day school.

Staff benefits

  • Access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).
  • School fee remission.
  • An electric car leasing scheme through salary sacrifice, subject to eligibility.
  • Discounts with participating local businesses, including 50% off Newt Gardens and Partners.

Benefits are subject to eligibility and the terms of the relevant scheme.

King’s Bruton is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be required to complete appropriate child-protection screening, including references from previous employers and an Enhanced DBS check.

Further details and an application form are available on the King’s Bruton vacancies page.
