About the role

We are looking for an experienced, reliable and hands-on Grounds Maintenance & Woodland Operative to support the ongoing maintenance of approximately 10 acres of land at Little Acres Day Nursery.

Our grounds include extensive grassed areas, woodland, forest school environments and natural outdoor learning spaces.

This is not a traditional gardening position. We are looking for someone with practical experience maintaining larger areas of land, managing overgrown vegetation and confidently operating grounds maintenance machinery.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain extensive grassed areas using ride-on lawnmowers and other appropriate equipment.
  • Manage woodland areas, including cutting back brambles, bushes and overgrown vegetation.
  • Maintain forest school spaces, woodland pathways and outdoor learning environments.
  • Undertake seasonal maintenance, including pruning, hedge cutting and leaf clearance.
  • Keep access routes, boundaries and outdoor areas safe and accessible.
  • Identify and report potential hazards, including damaged trees, fallen branches and unsafe ground conditions.
  • Carry out general grounds maintenance and minor outdoor repairs where appropriate.
  • Work independently to manage and prioritise ongoing maintenance tasks.
  • Support the nursery team in maintaining safe, attractive and engaging outdoor environments for children.

Essential experience

  • Previous experience in grounds maintenance, estate maintenance, landscaping, woodland maintenance or a similar role.
  • Proven experience operating ride-on lawnmowers.
  • Confident using strimmers, brushcutters, hedge trimmers and other grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Experience managing larger outdoor areas and overgrown land.
  • Good understanding of machinery safety and safe working practices.
  • Physically fit and comfortable undertaking demanding outdoor work.
  • Reliable, self-motivated and able to work independently.

Desirable experience

  • Previous experience in woodland or countryside management.
  • Relevant machinery qualifications or certifications.
  • Experience maintaining grounds within educational settings, estates or similar environments.
  • Understanding of forest school environments and the importance of preserving natural habitats.

Working hours

The position is approximately 16–24 hours per week, with flexibility depending on seasonal requirements.

Safeguarding

Little Acres Day Nursery is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful applicant will be required to follow all safeguarding and health and safety procedures, with appropriate pre-employment checks undertaken.

Pay: £15.00-£17.00 per hour

Expected hours: 15.0 – 25.0 per week
