Full job description

Are you passionate about plants and mental wellbeing? We are looking for an enthusiastic horticulturalist to oversee the production and maintenance of container grown plants on our professional nursery. The role requires the supervision of vulnerable adults. Chestnut Nursery is a project of the charity Plants and Minds (formerly SWOP) supporting adults with mental illness and has gained local acclaim for its excellent quality plants

A sound knowledge of practical horticulture is essential along with relevant qualifications and/or experience.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY DUTIES

Nursery

1. To develop the growing areas with a view to increasing production and improving quality of stock.

2. To work with the Nursery Manager to develop practical ways to move the nursery forward.

3. To be involved in nursery construction and development.

4. To plan and oversee the production of plants including bedding.

5. To be responsible for maintaining the health and quality of the stock and ensuring adequate watering and pest control.

6. To be involved in plant production records and labelling

7. To be involved in the planning and purchase of seasonal plant stock as required.

Volunteers

1. To plan, organise, supervise, motivate and support the volunteers in the day to day working of the nursery.

2. To monitor and report on issues related to volunteer welfare.

General

1. To comply with the Health & Safety At Work Legislation 1974.

2. To share responsibility for opening and closing the nursery daily.

3. To work some weekends to cover plant sales, watering and promotional events.

4. To be responsible for the project in the absence of senior staff.

5. To attend shows, plant sales and other promotional events as required.

6. Any other duties appropriate to the position as specified by the Nursery Manager.

This role is physical and will require you to carry out manual tasks.
