Castle Howard Estate Ltd is a renowned visitor attraction and working rural estate located just outside York. With a rich history spanning over 300 years, we welcome nearly 250,000 visitors annually to our stunning house and gardens. Our estate offers a variety of experiences, including events, shops, and cafes, while maintaining its status as a family home.

Job Purpose:

To maximise visitor enjoyment by maintaining excellent standards of presentation and plantswo/manship within the gardens of Castle Howard, involving borders, planters, etc. in accordance with the agreed work plan. A Senior Gardener will support the supervision and organisation of Castle Howards growing volunteer scheme. Whilst this role will centre around gardening in the Walled Garden work will also take place in the Grounds and Park.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain high standards of garden presentation at all times.
  • Sensitive and efficient seasonal maintenance
  • Liaise appropriately with more senior members of the department to create and carry out work plans etc.
  • Supervise on a day-to-day basis in guiding and supporting volunteers, work placement students, apprentices, etc.
  • Assist the Head of Landscape & Gardens with health and safety, operating within Castle Howard’s Health & Safety policy to ensure safety of staff, volunteers and visitors;
  • Administrative support within the department, including volunteer program management, reviewing risk assessments and managing plant records;
  • Propagation and culture of garden plants and potted displays
  • Appropriate, timely and safe use of pesticides.

Person Specification

Essential

Knowledge & Experience

  • Relevant experience of seasonal management of ornamental and productive displays
  • Basic plant knowledge and the motivation to expand on this skill
  • Knowledge of a range of horticultural techniques
  • Experience with general cultivation and propagation, outside and under glass
  • Good people skills
  • Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety and Compliance requirements

  • A flexible approach to work, supporting other departments when necessary.

Special Features

  • Proficiency in operating relevant garden machinery
  • Capable of undertaking all aspects of horticultural work and the physical challenges of the post
  • Current driving licence

Desirable

Education/Qualifications/Training

  • PA1/6

Knowledge & Experience

  • Some experience of staff and volunteer supervision
  • Experience of similar working environment/garden with permanent collections considered desirable.
