Full job description

Main Purpose

We are seeking a dynamic and commercially minded Site Manager to support the smooth running of Allerby Gardens and the new Hall Garden in Workington. This role will focus on ensuring these services are both profitable and sustainable while remaining true to our core values and the needs of the people we support. You will work closely with the management to oversee daily operations, drive income-generating initiatives, and support the people we work with to gain meaningful skills and opportunities within these settings. This is a hands-on role, combining business development with direct support work to create a thriving and inclusive environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational & Commercial Development Support the service in the day-to-day running of Allerby Gardens and Hall Garden.
  • Develop and implement income-generating activities while ensuring ethical and person-centred practices.
  • Work towards making the services financially sustainable without compromising the wellbeing of the people we support.
  • Identify and build partnerships with local businesses, suppliers, and customers to enhance the commercial potential of both gardens
  • Oversee stock, pricing, and sales strategies for produce and garden-related products.

Horticultural Leadership & Plant Management

  • Take a lead role in the planning, development, and maintenance of all horticultural activities across both garden sites.
  • Develop and manage seasonal planting schedules, crop plans, and ensure appropriate rotation and sustainability practices.
  • Monitor plant and soil health, implementing care routines and environmental practices that enhance productivity and biodiversity.
  • Oversee the procurement, planting, and harvesting of crops and plants, ensuring alignment with commercial goals and community needs.
  • Support the safe use, maintenance, and storage of horticultural tools and equipment.
  • Promote meaningful involvement of the people we support in gardening activities, enabling learning and engagement through hands-on experience.

Team Leadership & Compliance

  • Supervise and support staff and volunteers working in the gardens.
  • Ensure health and safety regulations are met, particularly in an outdoor, commercial environment.
  • Support the Enterprise Operations Manager with administrative duties, financial monitoring, and reporting

Supporting People We Work

  • With Ensure that the people we support are actively involved in garden activities, providing them with learning and development opportunities.
  • Assist in the development of work-based training and employment pathways within the gardens.
  • Offer hands-on support where required, ensuring a safe and engaging environment.
  • Conduct reviews, when required, with the people we support to ensure appropriate opportunities are identified.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a commercial, horticultural, or care setting. Strong understanding of business development and revenue generation in a social enterprise or care environment.
  • Passion for working with people with learning disabilities, ensuring inclusion and meaningful engagement. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to balance commercial and support responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations relevant to outdoor work and garden-based businesses.
  • A demonstrated commitment to pursuing higher education and professional development in horticulture.
  • A full UK drivers license

Desirable:

  • Background in horticulture, retail, or social enterprise.
  • Experience in grant applications, funding, or community engagement.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and best practices in supporting people with disabilities

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: £27,000.00-£31,000.00 per year

Expected hours: 35 – 39 per week
