Job Overview
We are looking for an Assistant Landscape Gardener to help with the care and maintenance of our gardens and outdoor spaces, assisting our Head Landscape Gardener with tasks that ensure the aesthetic appeal, health and sustainability of plants and landscapes.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Basic gardening knowledge: Familiarity with plant species, growth cycles, and the general principles of horticulture.
- Physical stamina: The role often involves physical labour like digging, lifting, and bending.
- Attention to detail: Ability to spot pests, diseases, or areas of the garden that need attention.
- Teamwork: Work well with Head Landscape Gardener and staff to meet the needs of the garden.
- Time management: Ability to work efficiently, often under deadlines (e.g., planting seasons).
Key Responsibilities:
- Planting and Cultivating: Assist with planting flowers, shrubs, trees, and other plants according to seasonal schedules. Ensure plants are properly watered, fertilized, and pruned.
- Maintenance: Help with lawn mowing, weeding, mulching, and trimming bushes or hedges to maintain garden cleanliness and health.
- Tool Management: Use and maintain gardening tools and equipment, ensuring they are properly cleaned, stored, and sharpened when needed.
- Pest Control: Assist in identifying and managing pests or diseases affecting plants. This could include applying pesticides, herbicides, or using organic solutions under supervision.
- Soil Care: Assist with the preparation and maintenance of soil, including testing, adding compost or fertilizers, and ensuring proper drainage.
- Landscape Design Support: Support the team with landscape design elements like constructing garden features (e.g., pathways, flower beds, water features).
- Cleaning and Tidying: Keep outdoor spaces, tools, and sheds tidy and organized.
- Plant Care: Watering plants, removing dead leaves, and ensuring that they are healthy and free of pests.
- Assisting with Planting Schedules: Help monitor the growth and condition of plants and flowers, taking note of their development.
Education and Experience:
- Education: Some formal training in horticulture or landscape design desired but not essential.
- Experience: Prior gardening or outdoor work experience is preferred.
Salary and Benefits:
- The applicant will be required to work 37.5 hours per week, 8.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and will be offered a salary in line with their experience and expertise (negotiable). Further benefits include four weeks paid holiday (plus bank holidays) and a work based pension if requested.
