Gardener (Voluntary Role)
Location: Betty Rushton Community Garden, Abbey Hulton
Organisation: Sutton Trust Community Group
Contact: contact@suttontrustcommunitygroup.co.uk
About Sutton Trust Community Group
Sutton Trust Community Group is a local charity working to benefit the residents of Abbey Hulton and the surrounding community.
The Betty Rushton Community Garden provides a welcoming community space where local people can meet, take part in activities, enjoy the outdoors and improve their wellbeing.
We are looking for friendly and enthusiastic Volunteer Gardeners to join our team and help us maintain and develop the community garden.
About the role
Working alongside our Garden Manager and other volunteers, you will help with the general care and maintenance of the garden. You don't need to be an experienced gardener — enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved are more important.
Tasks may include:
- Planting and caring for flowers, vegetables and other plants.
- Watering, weeding and general garden maintenance.
- Preparing beds and growing areas.
- Sowing seeds and helping to grow seasonal produce.
- Pruning and tidying plants where appropriate.
- Helping maintain raised beds, pots and planters.
- Keeping paths and outdoor areas tidy and welcoming.
- Composting and helping with environmentally friendly gardening.
- Helping with seasonal gardening tasks.
- Using basic gardening tools safely.
- Working alongside other volunteers and members of the community.
- Helping with community gardening projects and events when available.
Volunteers will only be asked to undertake tasks they are comfortable and able to do.
Who we're looking for
We're looking for people who enjoy being outdoors and would like to contribute to their local community.
Previous gardening experience is not essential, as support and guidance can be provided.
You should ideally be:
- Friendly and approachable.
- Reliable and willing to work as part of a team.
- Interested in gardening, growing or outdoor activities.
- Willing to learn new skills.
- Able to follow basic health and safety guidance.
- Respectful of other volunteers and visitors.
- Happy to contribute at a level suitable for your own abilities.
Time commitment
This is a flexible volunteering opportunity. You don't have to commit to a set number of hours every week.
Whether you can help regularly or just for a few hours when you're available, we'd be pleased to hear from you.
What you'll gain
Volunteering with us is an opportunity to meet new people, spend time outdoors, learn or share gardening skills, contribute to your local community and help keep the Betty Rushton Community Garden an attractive and welcoming space for everyone.
It's also a great opportunity for anyone looking to build confidence, gain practical experience or simply enjoy gardening alongside others.
Interested?
Apply through Indeed and tell us a little about yourself, your availability and why you'd like to volunteer with Sutton Trust Community Group.
