Gardener – 6 months FTC

Primary purpose:

We are looking for an experienced gardener to join our onsite team to work within the David Austin Roses Gardens and David Austin Roses Visitor Centre. You will be responsible for maintaining the gardens all year round and ensuring they are always looking at their best.

This role is for a fixed term of 6 months. Full time hours are available working 5 days out of 7. Some weekend work and bank holiday work will be required to fulfil the needs of the role.

Your day to day:

· Implement and oversee a comprehensive care plan for a diverse collection of rose varieties

· Undertake all gardening work ranging from planting, pruning, weeding, grass cutting and hedge trimming

· Perform seasonal rose pruning, deadheading, feeding, watering, and mulching

· Monitor and identify pests and disease and implement effective and environmentally friendly control measures

· Contribute to the design and layout of the gardens

· Engage with garden visitors, providing information and answering questions about the gardens and roses

· Operating and maintaining gardening tools and equipment

· You will also be required to occasionally spend time in our plant centre offering advice and information to our visitors looking to purchase a rose. This will include the following responsibilities:-

· Fulfilling bare root 1 hour orders

· Restocking the Plant Centre area

· Maintenance of work areas

· Dead heading, over-wintering and pruning of stock

· Irrigation of stock

· Collection of deliveries

What you bring to the team

· Horticulture experience and RHS Level 2 or college equivalent qualification preferred

· Proven experience as a gardener, preferably in a large-scale or commercial garden setting

· Strong understanding of horticultural principles and sustainable gardening practices

· Ability to operate and maintain gardening equipment/machinery

· Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions

· Good communication and teamwork skills

· Excellent customer service skills for interacting with garden visitors and plant centre customers

· Preferably PA1/PA6

· To fully understand the importance of being able to work in an open garden productively, whilst also being able to offer advice to the garden visitors and plant centre customers
