Job Type: Full-time
Overview: As a Horticultural Worker / Support Worker, you will be responsible for assisting individuals with learning disabilities in engaging in horticultural activities while providing them with necessary support to enhance their skills and independence. This role combines elements of horticultural work with providing personalized support to meet the unique needs of everyone. Please note we grow organically and a knowledge and willingness to use this method are very important to us.
Key Responsibilities:
- Horticultural Activities:
- Plan and facilitate horticultural activities suitable for individuals with varying levels of learning disabilities.
- Maintain and care for plants, large polytunnels, and green spaces in accordance with established horticultural practices.
- Teach basic gardening techniques such as planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting to participants.
- Create a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages active participation and enjoyment of horticultural activities.
- Individualized Support:
- Provide support to team members to enable one-on-one support and small teams to participants during horticultural activities, adapting assistance to each individual's abilities and needs.
- Assist participants in following instructions, staying focused, and completing tasks independently whenever possible.
- Offer emotional support and encouragement to help participants overcome challenges and build confidence in their abilities.
- Monitor participants' progress and assess their skills to tailor support plans and activities accordingly.
- Health and Safety:
- Ensure the safety and well-being of participants at all times during horticultural activities.
- Educate participants on safe gardening practices and equipment usage to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including storage areas for tools and supplies.
- Adhere to health and safety regulations and protocols relevant to horticultural work and support services.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Keep accurate records of participants' attendance, progress, and achievements.
- Document any incidents, concerns, or notable observations related to participants' behaviour or well-being.
- Prepare reports and updates for supervisors and relevant stakeholders as required.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Previous experience in horticulture, vegetable production through organic growing methods.
- Experience working with individuals with learning disabilities or similar populations highly desirable.
- Understanding of different learning styles and the ability to adapt support strategies accordingly.
- Patience, empathy, and excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of health and safety practices in horticultural settings.
Education Requirements:
- Additional certifications or training in horticulture, special education, or disability support services advantageous.
Working Conditions:
- This role involves outdoor work in various weather conditions.
- May require lifting and carrying heavy objects and equipment.
- Flexibility in working hours may be necessary to accommodate participants' schedules and program requirements.
- Assisting with transport duties and driving small min buses
