Job Overview

Whitehill Town Council is looking for a hardworking, enthusiastic, and community-minded Groundsperson to help maintain and enhance the town's parks, recreation grounds, open spaces, allotments, and protected natural areas.

Working alongside the Town Clerk, Deputy Town Clerk, and Head Groundsman, you will help keep Whitehill and Bordon's outdoor spaces safe, attractive, and accessible for residents and visitors. Duties include grass cutting, planting, landscaping, pruning, operating grounds maintenance machinery, carrying out repairs and supporting the care of important local environments, including Bordon Inclosure. The role also involves working with community groups, landowners, and partner organisations on projects that benefit the local area.

The successful candidate will have experience in grounds maintenance or horticulture, be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. A positive attitude, good communication skills, and a commitment to maintaining high standards are essential.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who takes pride in improving the local environment and making a positive impact within the community. Occasional weekend and out of hours working may be required.

Skills and Experience

Requirement

To be proficient in a range of maintenance and practical skills including:

Painting

Basic plumbing

Repairs to fencing, gates and play equipment.

Essential

Experience in garden, horticultural and grounds maintenance, including planting, pruning, grass cutting, landscaping, and the maintenance of ornamental planting schemes, flower beds, shrubs, trees, landscaped areas and public open spaces, with a good understanding of plant care and seasonal maintenance requirements.

Experience operating tractors, ride-on mowers, flail mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, and other grounds maintenance equipment

Essential

To undertake pre-use inspections, basic servicing, cleaning, and reporting of defects on machinery and equipment.

Essential

Understanding of safe working practices when using machinery, undertaking manual handling, working near the public, and carrying out outdoor maintenance tasks.

Essential

Knowledge of maintaining grassed pitch areas to a high standard, including cutting schedules, presentation, turf care, aeration, fertilisation and seasonal maintenance programmes.

Desirable

To hold an in-date playarea inspection qualification from a recognised body i.e. ROSPA

To hold a tree inspection qualification i.e. LANTRA Basic Tree Survey

Qualification and experience in the safe use of chainsaws for grounds maintenance and tree work.

Legionella Awareness qualification and experience of undertaking routine Legionella monitoring checks on low-risk water systems
